Say you want a saw to run a bar of 28 inches in hardwood, about what size saw, in general, would you say it would take?

I guess it depends what your doing specifically. Most 70cc class pull a 28 just fine, especially a 461 or 7900/7910. If you want to run the bar like it owns it, then maybe something along the lines of a 390xp. It is heavier, uses more fuel and not a whole lot faster speed wise with a 24-28” bar, but it does have more torque and a way wider powerband. I wouldn’t run the 390xp until a 32” bar personally. But to each there own.

I personally think the 372, ms 440/441 is the minimum on that size bar to cut halfway efficient. But would prefer the 76 cc on up for that length bar and a pile of hardwood that requires the bar length. A 28” would run on a ms 362 size saw if the long bar was to keep you from bending over as much and the logs on average were smaller.

390xp or 661 depending on brand preference and budget.

A 372xp will run it, but is very slow buried in oak.

What does nobody mean, lol? What is that pic, looks like maybe a Stihl ms201 with a long bar. Must be hopped up, is that yours?
It’s a running joke. It’s called a piltz race kit or whatever. Just a stock saw with massive spikes and a bar/sprocket that’s too big for it.
