I guess it depends on if your talking in the cut or just for making pïss rev videos. Me personally I think you should be worried about in the cut… You know where the work actually gets done.

What does it mean when the saw only drops 1K when the it hits the wood?

Depends on the saw and the operator. I never checked RPMs when my brother uses his 660. When I use it, Im sure it runs 500 to 750 RPM faster than when he uses it. Who is operating it properly, no one will ever know. I have checked RPMs on my ms361, it seems to get the most work done around 10,500 RPM. My ms391 runs about 1000 rpm slower than that.

the stock jred 2188 which is a husky 390xp with an 8pin rim and a 32" bar semi skip square ground chain that i sharpened on my grinder with the depth guages filed down to where i like them not completely broken in or ramped up to it full power yet runs 10k in this cherry log that i found down the street from my house it was probably laying there for six months or so from the ice storm last winter. i was having trouble tuning that saw with the brand new carb. i put a kit in the old carb and it runs great now.

I think thoughts have changed a bit over the yrs..
blunt vs sharp,
chip thickness,
smooth cutting,
angles of teeth!
Hard vs softwood,
sq ground/filed vs round filed, as well as Semi chisel vs full chis
Then you can add skip, semi or hyper skip.

these all change cutting speeds in the wood.

i will be interested to others thoughts on this, but once you go over 11/12k in the cut it don’t seem to cut any faster. There are other ways to eat through the log with some of the things is listed above.;)
Diameter of wood being cut matters too!
Ported 90cc saw in 10" stick does not compare to stock 80cc work saw in 20+" log. ;)

Stock 90cc are usually 8.5-9k with a brand new chain on a 24” bar. Woods ported can be 11-12k
I am seeing 8.5-10k in cut on my stock saws (64-79cc), 20" 3/8" full chisel full complement round filed fully buried in turkey oak.
7300 is the fastest, 7900 has the most torque, 6400 is the least aggressive and most comfortable, 7310 is the spot on all rounder.

IIRC, my ported XS5000 & MMWS6100 turn 10-10.5k in dry beech 3/8" 20" full chisel full complement round filed with the bar tip only just peeking out the other side of the log.
They are aggressive and tiresome to operate as work saws in hardwoods, or so I feel.

7 pin on all mentioned saws.

So where's the pic? Something like that you would surely be proud enough of to keep on your computer. Or other device.
