Im gonna buy some cheapo 4" wheels from menard's to play with. No sense in destroying $30 wheels

After the wheel broke I just shut it off and went in the house[emoji34]

These go on sale for about $12 a piece, and provide similar results to the Oregon wheels (Grande Dog says one is slightly coarser than the other). You may not be happy with the Menard's wheels, especially when starting out and just learning to grind - like putting cheap chain on a good saw. IMHO. And smaller diameter wheels will not cut the same (slower rim speed due to reduced circumference).

These are another option:

Well I got a new wheel and the guys at my dealer were laughing at me they said you hand file perfect chain for 25 years, try something new and all of us sudden you're a rookie again. They also tried to sell me some chains in case I screwed up some more[emoji1]

You would be much happier with a diamond wheel, I started with those pink ones too and could do a descent job sharpening but nothing like after I got the good wheel. It plug up don't ever have to dress it, those pink ones you'll have to dress it a couple times per chain if you get a real rocked out chain

It might be the wood too. The piece i cut was real dead white oak, i put the brand new chain on and the chips were the same.

Here is the chain i ground its Oregon DPX

. . . the guys at my dealer were laughing at me they said you hand file perfect chain for 25 years, try something new and all of us sudden you're a rookie again.

It is a new skill. But you have the advantage of knowing what a sharp chain looks like - what you are trying to accomplish. Files and grinders are just tools that help us achieve that, but they don't do it automatically.

P.S. - did you really take that photo while driving?????

The cutters on that chain all aren't the same length so thats probably one of the shorter ones so the wheel didn't hit the whole tooth.

I'll play around more later but im getting it figured out so i'll take a little more metal off and get it all evened out.

p.s. philbert.....guilty on the driving pic i just pulled out the dealer nobody was by me but still should've waited.

This chain was messed up after it hit an eye bolt so just going little by little until the cutters are the same and until get it all figured out, some teeth It hardly touches and on others it takes a bigger bite but I'm getting the hang of it.

Practice on your friends' chains until you get good . . . .

[emoji1] good idea

Its getting better...that dark spot on the left of the cutter is a shadow it was shiny all acrossed the tooth. The amount of pressure to use is the biggest learning curve for me, its easier if I just use the pressure from moving my fingers instead of pulling down with my arm

What would you think of those cutters if you had filed them ?

I wouldn't like it if i had filed it. Hopefully I get better on the grinder soon[emoji3]

I'm not a chain guru like most of you guys are, but im not racing and good enough works for me. As long as its sharp I'm not worried about perfect[emoji1]

To me, having a straight edge helps ......... filed or ground, I take away enough tooth so the entire edge is the profile
