That’s what I do. Usually that’s right about when the wear indicator on the Oregon sprockets is worn off too. The OP’s picture of that particular sprocket? I toss them when they look like that. It’s one of those parts that’s so cheap to replace that it isn’t worth getting every last bit of performance. I found I get longer life out of sprockets keeping proper chain tension and cranking the oiler up as much as possible. I wore out 3 bars and a lot of chains with the original sprocket on my 572.If I notice that the drive links are digging into the clutch drum I'll put a new one on.

Yeah I have heaps of the standards spline and about 15 oregon small spine problem with that is the female part of the spline on the sprocket it's too big for a STIHL clutch drum and it flogs the living crap out of the crank bearing so I'm forced to pay $18 a Sprocket for my 261 .
And with a bit of shopping around i don't have to pay $750 for a roll of 46RM I can now get it for $620 .
Your MS261 uses a Stihl proprietary 'micro spline™'. Some refer to them as mini-spline. This spline size is smaller than your regular small spline Oregon/whatever brand sprocket. Now you can change your clutch drum out to an Oregon to run standard small spline rims or you can now buy micro spline rims on eBay from China in .325 or 3/8 Picco for about $3 a pop. If you run Oregon small spline they will work and you can cut wood but you'll round off the edges on the drum splines in short order, wrecking the drum. I've been pretty happy with the AM rims from China, I ain't paying $33 at the Stihl dealer.Yeah I have heaps of the standards spline and about 15 oregon small spine problem with that is the female part of the spline on the sprocket it's too big for a STIHL clutch drum and it flogs the living crap out of the crank bearing so I'm forced to pay $18 a Sprocket for my 261 .

I say good on the homeowner/inexperienced/dodgy guy's that can actually get that much use out of a saw to cut a rim or sprocket in half, most don't get more than 3 tanks of fuel out of a saw before straight gassing it lol
