Remington 700 6.5 Creedmoor

Every rifle is a law unto itself, it amazes me how so many folks can't figure that out. The 6.5 snobs all shoot expensive heavy barrel rifles. I guess the possibility that an inexpensive sporter *might* shoot better with something else violates the laws of physics. Matter of fact, the Nosler manual says that IMR 8208 is the most accurate powder they tried for this cartridge.

Depends on your use. I want to shoot PRS style events and you need the heavy barrel to get 5-10 shots off in 90-120 seconds without major impact shifts. My savage loves H4350 and IMR 4451. If I do my part it will shoot 1-1.5” at 4-500 yards 5 shots.

Will have to remember that. My .257 loves 38.5 grains under a 117 grain Sierra Pro Hunter. Best 5 shot group I ever shot had three holes. A real shooter could have put them all into a single hole. Shot some of those today in a very casual sight in after work, made a neat inch group at 100 yards off shooting sticks. That may not sound impressive, but with most other rifles I shoot a two to three inch group at 100 without a benchrest.

This is a 5 shot group @ 100 yds from my .22-250 during load testing / barrel break in. I perform both at the same time - why waste barrel life?

When I start making new loads, I find the seating depth that my rifle will handle first, without the bullet touching the rifling (and also as long as it does not interfere with the magazine length). After that I work up 5, 5 shot test loads - each group of 5 varies in powder charge by .5gr of the same powder of choice. When those are loaded (usually I load them from .5gr HIGHER than recommended MAX load, down) I test them, and clean between each of the 5 shot strings. Not only am I breaking the barrel in, I’m finding the best load for my rifle with that given combination of components. Works for me!

Also, I performed the above break in / load test with my 250 - then cleaned it thoroughly. After that I headed to SD for that PDog hunt. I fired over 300 shots through that barrel in 2 days without “cleaning” and never lost accuracy. I did however pull a Bore Snake through at least once per day. I then thoroughly cleaned when I got home - however was impressed by the lack of fouling that was present. It should be noted that I used Varget for powder.

Varget is a good one that works in alot of different cartridges. Interestingly, some of the most accurate .30-30 rounds I ever tried were with Varget. My best friend uses it exclusively in his .243.

Varget works good for 223. I’ve never used it for anything else. I think my next 6.5 is going. Be a 6.5x47

Currently very happy with RL7 in my .223. Varget went extinct for several years here, I discovered that IMR 4064 is an excellent substitute and always in stock. My standard .30-30 load was always 31 grains Varget under a 150 grain Hornady or Sierra. 30 grains 4064 is a dead ringer so that is what I use nowadays.

Varget is good in the 6.5x47 so I could go down to one powder for both main calibers I load for.

I'm now glad I didn't start out the 6.5 with H4350. Turns out I had just enough left for 40 rounds of my pet .257 Roberts load. So, I definitely have enough to verify zero at different ranges and then go hunting. I won't be able to buy any more powder 'til next week and no guarantee that H4350 will be available, given how popular it is.

I use Varget because it’s temperature stable. I know that more powders are being developed this way, but Varget was one of the first, and still fires extremely clean. Where I live, I could be hunting coyotes in the winter at -10 or more, and then use the same rifle(s) for other varmints in the summer at 100+.. I have tried other powders with disappointing results. Exp: my .17 Remington made awesome sub-moa groups at 70 degrees when sighted in, then opened up to a 4” group during a +5 degree day!! What prompted me to check was that I missed a few shots I should have made without issue.. so for me, Varget is my Go-To.

Been deer hunting with the 6.5 since Saturday. Haven't been able to pull the trigger yet, but I must say it is a pleasure to carry and the cheap plastic stock actually fits me really well. Along with the .30-30 and .257, the 6.5 is a real favorite of mine.

My buddy has a 260 Rem. Isn't the 6.5 Cred a little slower than the 260 rem??
My 264 mag has been a good one.
