Question from a noob about porting..

How do you know what port timing numbers you need?
Experience, gamble or do you steal the numbers from other builders?

I think it would be better referred to as information sharing rather than stealing. Comes down to research and development. Trials of several different combinations of numbers. Some better for speed and high RPMs, and some better for lower RPM torque.
Great bunch of guys here on this forum.

Stock numbers are always good to look at. What were the engineers thinking? And what am I looking to change about the saws performance? R&d from other members and their sharing of what has worked for them is considered. Previous builds I’ve done as well.
The problem with numbers from others, is that everyone times cylinders different, so they are relative. I’ve tested with others and found that numbers can be hugely different and the saws all run strong. I think a lot of results come more from grinding styles than numbers.

Intake manifold done. I do it just like a port. I take it to the edges, then blend it back to the other side of the manifold.

It slightly asymmetrical, I’m just matching the stock port entry.

Good call. Don't rush on my behalf. I might have unboxed a new Husky last week which has helped quench my new thirst for the other orange saws. rps20180218_114051_489.jpg
Forgive the mess, we just moved in a few weeks ago.

This saw didn’t run before so I started pulling the carb apart. I don’t like the look of this diaphragm...

And it’s stiff...
I’m gonna need a carb kit.
