View attachment 293612 View attachment 293613 View attachment 293614 Any of you ever seen a broken cylinder fin? Turned out to be the source of the rattle on the 260 I’m rebuilding. Also, if the rings are friction welded, that would mean straight gas was ran through the saw, correct?
The intake side probably unrelated to the exhaust, or the pressure to ex side pushed piston too hard against the opposite wall.

The exhaust side is typical. Scoring from overheating almost always happens on the PTO side of the Ex port. It’s part of why Stihl added the heat deflectors to later models. It’s supposed to help push flywheel air across the exhaust fins around the muffler.

Interesting thread.
Like everyone else, I see everything imaginable from the saw that looks like it was drug behind a skidder, to where on earth did you find an older pro saw in such wonderful condition.
I enjoy working on used saws as much as new, it is a time killer to get right. Inspection is crucial for any success.
Saws that have been repaired after a lean out, straight gas, or some other blown up event can be problematic when the bottom end wasn't taken into consideration the first time. The crankshaft and bearings having to digest shrapnel from the top end.
Then comes the price tag of righting all the wrongs. For me I'm either all in, or all out, there's usually not much middle ground to work with.
Right now depending on your favorite brand new saws and new parts can also be a problem, so it's a toss up in the "new normal."
I agree on interesting thread and great topic. Im glad Randy refered me to you Amigo. Got the 395 back in buisness. Well when the back gets right.

Could be. I'd tear it down and check everything. New seals, gaskets, rubber bits, etc.
Seals, gaskets, rubber bits, piston and cylinder already on the way. Was going to get the 44mm 026 jug from saw salvage for some added pep, but they were out of stock, so I just got the stock 260 44.7mm bore‍♂️I’m excited for my first rebuild regardless

Post a thread in the saw forum of your build. We need that sort of content.....it's a great way to learn...and teach others in the process !!!!

Are the other 2 corners scored also? Usually the edges of the skirt scoring like that are from revving or cutting before the saw was warmed up. The piston heated up and expanded before the cylinder did
People look at me funny when I idle and blip my saws and take a temperature "feel" on the saws cylinder fins letting the saw warm up.
I also get weird stares when I let my saws idle after a WOT run prior to shutting them down.

Around here a saw gets started up and ran WOT from cold engine till hot engine shutdown!
The Stihl and Husqvarna dealers must be happy.

I really have no idea other than what I have read. I’ve never had anything oil or heat related happen to any of mine personally. The only real failures I see in my ported saws are a couple snagged rings from too tight of a ring end gap.

Will do! Parts are supposed to show up tomorrow. I’m torn between just rebuilding this saw for the learning process, or trying to do a minor woods port.
