We didn’t include redoing a saw that’s already had a bad porter in it. The 3rd and worst type.

So, I’ll never touch a saw that’s been ported by another again, as in ever.

Well, I have to say you sure got into a jackpot on that one. That said I believe it to be the worst of the worst, everything else should be easy in comparison.
I have repaired numerous saws by other builders(Yes Ported saws need maintenance and repaired like any other saws there folks) as far as what I'll do and won't do on that subject;
Do list;
Fix and repair whatever problem the saw is encountering and get it running in the condition as best as possible to what the owner originally had.
Have some respect for what the original builder was trying to accomplish even if it ain't your thing.
Don't list;
Don't name drop the builders name, I just refer to them as built by others.
Don't talk about previous work to the owner unless it specifically pertained to the problem encountered and was part of what needed remedied.
Don't try and time out their cylinders.
Don't try and port over the cylinder, now you own it.
Don't even touch a JMS saw.

JMS.....the gift that keeps on giving.

More like a turd that won't flush. Lol

I'm gonna file chains and put this back together. Sawmikaze doesn't do rain, I'm allergic to it.

I ended up getting one of those hyway pop up pistons.

Wish me well.
Please measure that piston first or start buying them from me. It matters bish. One in three or four is a no go for myself. I'm a picky c###.

Think I'm devolving allergies myself ;-)

You guys hiding from rain or something out there today?
I am. Have a willow to drop and was hoping to get her on the ground in between the rain pockets. Went to the bank, did my business, and took a drive around the countryside in my area to get my own forecast. Kept driving through the rain ...on and off. A few down pours as well. Was raining at the willow tree too. Lots of targets on the ground. House, pool, garage, neighbors property ... I'm not playing in the rain.
I could rig it down but the owner can't afford that right now. They bought an old house they're remodeling. They can afford me to drop it and walk away.

Now to put this thread back on the rails, I do not care to run my saws in the rain unless I absolutely have to. Makes them so much messier inside.

I've never had a used chain saw ported. I never will.

Closest thing I've done to that is with a friend of mine who's a machinist, we've done some mild port jobs on old saws to practice. But I wouldn't put one of the builders on here through that headache.

I just get bugged when my big ropes and gear gets soaked. Cutting in the rain ain't bad but I'm about done with it at my age. Cutting in the sleet or snow you pay double and I work sloooow or I walk. Roof is tripled in white stuff, climbing... gfy.

So used saws to ported monster seems like a recipe for disaster. Those lil round things needs replacing before the hurt comes and long bars. Many saw I would avoid porting and have. The stuff with tiny pto bearings begs me to steer clear of those. Now the Pittsburg Pirate here could use his spinny thingy on this build but it will already be going together when he reads this post, poast or Post idk...

We didn’t include redoing a saw that’s already had a bad porter in it. The 3rd and worst type.

I recently redid a JMS saw for the second time for a member. Anything Jason got his hands on was no good, it’s almost like he built shít out of parts that none wanted.

In round 1, I told the customer that I wouldn’t redo porting without a case split and a redo of everything. I do recall the PTO crank being a bit too easy to push into the bearing on that side (I think). The saw ran for a short time, then it didn’t. The carb had some major issues as well that couldn’t be remedied, even with a new nozzle.

Round 2. The new Flywheel side SKF 6202 got taken out. The seal fell out into my hand when I split the case. The bearing was shot. Head scratcher for sure. Crank around .001 too small on the PTO side piece that rides in the bearing race. Chuck crank up on the lathe and the face on that side is out. Someone must have Emory clothed it on one side only and the wobble is likely what took out the fly bearing. Had to pull and clean my builder case crank and give it to the customer. Then, of course, 2 of 3 coil bolts were stripped-one was ok during round one, not sure what happened. Entire inside of saw was coated with grey goop-if you’ve been in a saw with ground metal you know what I mean.

So after a new crank, another flywheel, new bearings, around 4 timeserts, new seal/gasket kit and a used and rebuilt carb the saw runs again. I actually offered to buy the saw, it was that frustrating.

So, I’ll never touch a saw that’s been ported by another again, as in ever.

I'll JMS one up you with the 064/066 nightmare I fixed last year, it was sold with all this damage present and hacked with epoxy. I welded 5 different areas on the PTO side case half alone, bar stud area, upper spike mount, lower rear AV loop, hole into the oil tank and cracked bar pad supports. Then it took a few time serts or heli-coils on stuff I didn't want to ditch cut and weld. Mike powdered all the mag parts after I fixed them up and the owner is very happy to have a decent saw.

You've sent me some pretty mess up stuff but not nearly as bad as others. Seems Rattler finds 288's used by Gorillas and the McCulloch guys send 1/2 of parts and hope I can just make the rest up.

Still some good saws with low hours or very well kept worth doing some port work on to improve it some. Going crazy like 240 psi and high rpms you might just not want that AM crank or crunchy bearings in anything. I do believe most builders insist on OEM parts in the basement for ported saws or a serviceable equivalent.
Going to try Cross bearings in a milling saw here, big Husky, ported. I'll know soon enough how long they last. Just keep thinking it won't be long for the cheap ones. Have to do it. Then put in some decent ones from a reputable supplier with quality parts. Plenty of them out there.

There is an other alternative to having a ported used saw. You ' may ' be able to convince a porter to do a new cylinder for you and ship it alone if he is doing a production run on that particular component.
Your squish won't be dead tight, and assembly is all on you, but it is a possibility.

Finding the porter is part of the adventure...
