Poge Smit

I received a call on Sunday that Poge Smit (PogoInTheWood) had passed away after a brief battle with cancer.

Many of you will be familiar with Poge, as he was a great source of information and real world experience with our chainsaw questions.

The Automatic oiler was the only thing I was wondering about?

The auto oiler version had the oil tank fill hole (and an adjuster) on the case above the bar plate (as opposed to the bottom fill of the manual versions) as illustrated below. (I believe I may actually have one or two.)
It also used a weird sized oil seal on the PTO side that isn't a commonly available size according to the pre-eminent 'bearings and seals list' that has been compiled over the years. Evidently substitutes have been tried with varying degrees of success, but that's a different conversation...

Hey fellas. Long time...

I tried helicoils years ago in what we've all seen as the commonly hogged out 55 intake bulkheads. I haven't looked back since.

That said, care still must be taken depending on the amount of real estate and structural integrity of the available material..., especially with these particular style intakes as shown in post #119. And those plastic threads were still strong enough to effectuate the stress cracks shown, probably with some able assistance from me attempting to torque the fasteners just a hair more to conquer the leak. Uhhhh... no. LOL

They're common across the board for all the saws with that a/v setup. OEM is about the same price (or less) from a dealer when you factor in the ProLLine shipping.

And let's not forget, the extra range in the 461 a/v (and the others) is actually a selling point and a desired feature by lots of folks!

Actually, the critical point when mixing AM and OEM is the tolerance between the AM clip groove and the OEM clip. Hence my concern as explained. The only times I've used OEM clips in AM pistons I used new OEM clips. Never re-used.

And for the record, I've used dozens and dozens of the provided AM clips with and without trimmed ears and not had one single failure. On the other hand, my only clip failures were both OEM clips with OEM piston kits. One deformed and lost tension when installed and the other was simply not completely installed.

And fwiw, OEM clips will bend and deform just...

Poge left behind an assortment of saws, project, tools, etc. and his friend is reaching out to see if anyone can help in seeing that his widow gets a fair value for those things he left behind.

Poge was located around 30 miles southwest of Cleveland, OH. If you are in the area and could offer some assistance, please let me know and I can put you in contact with Poge's friend that is helping the family.
