My 92 Thunderbird SC (had a SC 6 cyl with a 5 spd manual) had a Mazda truck transmission in it. At the time, Ford owned part of Mazda (that is where the Escape came from). I guess that was the only 5 speed they had available that would handle the torque of the SC V - 6. Was a strong tranny, but wanted to shift slow as crap! That was my first car with IRS (Ford got that through their Jaguar ownership stake). Nice car, but 3,800 lbs!

I had to get the tranny rebuilt after a few years (I eventually put over 250,000 on that car, and I went through my divorce then, they were not easy miles). The Transmission guy is talking to me, says the tranny is in good shape, "but I don't know how this gear shifting lever got bent". I looked at him and said "I do"! The synchro's in that tranny sucked!

And Ferd and Chebby sharing transmissions now.
Oh the humanity!

I'm not an automatic guy, but that 10 speed is going into everything from Trucks to Mustangs, and is said to be awesome! You can't keep up with the 10 spd Mustang with a stick shift, it just stays in the best power range. Enables out of the showroom Mustangs to run 11s (on regular street tires) on a good day.
