lol if youd see some of the welds others have left overhead or vertical youd know why i get volunteered for it
Thats something some "welders" havent figured out apparently.
You cant just stick the rod in there and expect all the magic metal to stay put.
I usually do a cross and fast freeze overhead. Stay on the sides and cross the middle quick for vertical, unless theres a gap, then cross and freeze the gap.

and dont try going to fast up vertical
your only gonna get 3 or 4 inches per rod and rod angle is another key

vertical is my favorite

Mine too, though my covers look like chit nowadays. Shoulders are gone. Used to be able to make a nice stack of nickles and make an over under weave. Now it looks like a stack of loose change, or maybe a drunk dirt dauber nest.
On angle, I like about 10 degrees up. Slightly pushing up from horizontal.
I dont do non ferrous.
If I cant weld it with a 7018, its not gonna happen.

I got a nice hot bead of lava in my arm pit yesterday welding on my buddies grapple. Most times I can work through it but that one made me dance.
I was in the lift basket with one of our guys years ago welding overhead. He had on leathers, but a sparkly got down the collar and ended up somewhere close to his belly button. Was pretty funny listening to him yell Owwww! Louder and longer the farther he wiggled it down. To his credit, he never broke arc the whole time.
