I think you may have the names mixed up, maybe not (I'm still new to this) but if I recall the older KS non-decomps are like hens teeth and run stronger. My brother has 2 ( lucky bugger ) and it definately runs stronger than the mahle on my saw due to the smaller combustion chamber.

It's the other way around with the 288, but I have a KS that @rattler ported that runs strong.

Well, I can speak on a couple of these questions... The current production OEM KS cylinder run quite strong, Josh's is a beast. Well worth it and if this were my saw I might just spring for a new OEM cylinder kit and shelf the Mahle cylinder for a rainy day project

I have an older KS non-decomp cylinder and all things equal, Josh's new production KS seems to have a fair bit more attitude. We haven't put his cylinder on the wheel yet, but I for one am very curious to compare it to an old KS like mine and see what if anything is different between the two. Just going on how they feel in 24" of sugar maple, I prefer Josh's current production KS over any others I have tried so far with ports in stock config and just a BG delete and muffler mod.

Well I think I'll be building 2 of these saws now.... I was checking the old Craigslist and came across 2-2100's and a 288 all for $400.00.
Both 2100's are supposed to run. One 2100 has a 60" bar and 2 chain with it. I started this one and seams to be good. The other one is just the PH. The rope was all waded up in the starter paws and would turn over. I got it home and put a different starter I had on it, I haven't started it yet but the compression seams really good and it has spark, I think this is the better saw. Looks like I'm getting a pile of this 2100's. Lol. The 288 seams complete just not sure if it runs... he said "it's a parts saw". sounds like a builder.....

Oh yeah...., and on the way out the door I asked if he had any other saws for sale....He said " I have this one"... IMG_3574.JPG
IMG_3575.JPG IMG_3576.JPG
..." I'd take $150.00 for it"...
I said I'd do $100 as is or $150.00 if it runs. End up paying a buck fifty..... with a good 32" bar and about 5 chains....
This one is a strong runner with great compression! Looks like it will clean up well... took a minute to clear up and idle. I don't think it was ran in quite awhile. But seams strong....!

My ported 281xp with a K$ jug ran super strong until the rings fully seated. It then ran super duper strong. Then it became a chore just to start. Then, not long afterwards, it became nearly impossible to start. I am replacing it with a very mildly ported 288 top end mostly to get the decomp in and some of the compression out.
Anyone in Ireland need a ported 281 jug?

what do you guys think?

$150 for a running 046 wrap with a good bar in SW WA? That is an amazing shteel. I got $350 for mine when I was in Willamina, OR within days after putting it up for sale.

IMG_2353.JPG I love these saws. They really are in a class of their own. This is my 2101

Sir, YOU SUCK. Big saws don't come up often on CL in the southeast. When they do they want full retail eBay $ for them. A guy in Charlotte wants a grand for a fair to decent 084 with a 36" bar. Urrrrggggg. Drives me nuts to see deals like this.

Well I started to pull apart this 2nd 288 to see what I have..... someone has been inside of it....
IMG_3580.JPG IMG_3582.JPG IMG_3586.JPG IMG_3595.JPG It looks good and clean in some spots and not so great in others. The drive link have really cut into the pto side....
If you guys see anything that is worth noting please by all means....
Like is there a difference between the black coil on the first 288 and the blue one on the second.....

If you have the chamber and base cut on your 288 expect similar (albeit slightly less) starting attitude even with the decomp.

It ain't doin' nothing of the sort. I'm not even gonna do a gasket delete on the new 288 top end. I opened up the intake slightly and added a few degrees of timing, angling the intake more towards the bottom of the chassis. I then opened up the bottom transfers a touch enough to get rid of the lip, and worked on the exhaust outlet, but I didn't change the size or timing of it at the inside port, same with the upper xfers. All left alone. I just want a solid, reliable, easy-starting saw with super duper mid range, that will pull big bars. So we'll see how she does here. I'm putting it together this week and testing it on large spruce to start. I was actually struggling with whether I should do any porting at all. But when I saw how straight the intake was and how high the lowers were, I just couldn't leave them alone.
