Having worked at Stihl during the change from the 0 to the MS in around 2001 I liked both groups for some different reasons but if I had to choose I would still have to say I like the 0 group more plus the 028 and 038 were bullet proof saws .
The biggest reason is the pre EPA saws just seem to run stronger and you could set them up so they really run nice , also they just seemed easier to work on too .

The modern saws run really strong too , not knocking those but these have come along after my time with the company so I'm not as comfortable with them nor do I have the diagnostic tools .

I went thru the same damn thing as an auto mechanic back in the 80's when we were switching from carbs to fuel injection and ECM's !! , too many glitches which I'm sure will improve in time .

You can always justify another saw.

Fuel injection is pretty standard for cars now and trouble free. It makes you wonder why something as simple as a autotune saw has problems. Keith's 550 issue is just amazing. They can't fix it, so they give you another saw. I'll keep my carb saws for now.

Keith, I had to google "knave" and Im still unclear how your using this word in reference? Regardless, as Im assuming, 044-066 are a sweet spot of the lineup.

Older "0" series, 038, 041, 056, 090 just dang cool and get the job done.

Ported 661 just makes me giggle. :)

"Crest of a Knave," was the 1987 Grammy Award-winning classic album by a rock band called Jethro Tull which capably relegated the Metallica classic, "And Justice for All," to second place.....

I don't have enough run time on stihl spring saws to vote either for or against, other than Dave's 441. It's noticeably smoother than previous models. But I've got 10 or 12 "0" models and their ms twins in the garage that get it done every time. The slight difference in av doesn't bother me

I can't choose! I actually prefer flippy caps to screw in ones, but i think some (not all) of the O series saws out ran their MS series counterparts.

That said, if I had to pick another saw for my lineup, it would be a very tough choice between an 064 or a 661. I think either one would put a big smile on my face!

Only if there are pics of fluids running down your pants. That sounded weird, didn't it? o_O

He fluids, or she fluids? The difference is real.

Do you remember electronic carbs in the 80s?

They were crap. Then came EFI.

That's where we are with saws, in the e-carb era. EFI is coming.

It took them a while to get it right but as Mastermind mentioned we are in the electronic carb stage and those had me tearing my hair out back in the day .
Diagnostics were the big issue in those days and I think we're seeing that again with issues that can't seem to be fixed , I'm sure the Tech's at the dealerships are frustrated with it as are the companies building saws .
It's going to take time to sort it out and get it right , the EPA is forcing the issue now with OPE as they did with cars , unfortunately we are the ones that have to live with it .

I sold my 85 Mustang GT cause I had issues with the electronic carb that I could not resolve.
