Hi,

i looking for a new 90ccm saw. Now I have to decide between the Stihl MS 661 and 660.

The saw should be ported. The 661 is of course the 660 superior. But what about the tuning?

Has anyone experience with it?

Thanks

Thank You.

depends on who ports them, I still like the 660, i'm not a m-tronic fan

Scott is right there. It depends on the builder. I get a little more out of the 660 myself. But I would still rather have a 661 to use all day.

Both of Y'all build Real good 661s.

That'd be my choice, a monkey61.

You can put a regular carb on one if you want.
I prefer the mtronic though.

It takes a pretty good 066 cylinder for me to compete with my 661's ,a 660 will be hard for me to make stronger than a 661.

A 661 cylinder is consistent and can be made to run close to the same everytime where a 660 is all over the place, with the last ones made being poorly timed.
I love a 660 and built my business porting them but the 661 is superior in every way.

To me a stock 660 is a stinker but a stock 661 runs pretty good.

Two guys I know in WA state both have 661's and 660's. The one has a well built 661 with a wj65 carb but not much time on it, the other has a stock 661 except a max flow. Both had problems with the mtronic crap and one of them had problems with the top cover and the top cover mounts. Really hard to beat an 066/660 for toughness and reliability.

Hi,

Thank you for so many replies.

I have to earn money with the saw. Durability is therefore very important. My ported 461 is unfortunately broken after 3 years now.

My budy has a 661. The air filter is just as bad as the 461. Probably the 660 filter can not be much worse. Unfortunately, I know none of the 660 still has.

Until now I had no problems with my 261 M Tronic.

I've owned 6 or 7 660s + 066s. few 064s. and I'm on about the 12th 661. Ran em all stock and ported.

gas mileage - 661 all the way.

anti vib - 661 all the way. My wrists and elbows no longer hurt after running the saw all day (using 661).

m tronic - if you have the 4701A coil and a "straight" intake boot (both of which come on every 661 I've seen 2015 or newer) then I don't think you'll have a problem. I haven't had any problems.

tune wise - 661 is always tuned correctly. No screwing with it or worrying about it. That said I know scott hasn't re tuned his 044 or 064/066hybrid in years.

air filtration - I don't really care for the filtration on either one. I do like the max flow setup much much better..

porting - Takes a strong ported 64 66 660 to beat basically a stock 661. But you don't get as much gain with a ported 661 over stock 661. So basically a strong ported 64 66 660 is very close to a strong ported 661.

I actually think the 661 has a worse filter setup than a 660,wish they would have used the 441 setup.

I think the Maxflow is worth every penny, I remember running the HD2 on the 661 even at a half tank it would be dirty vs the 441 filtration.

The thing about the Maxflow is it has pretty much stopped the fines from passing by.

Good morning,

Does the Maxflow filter have problems with resin? Looks a little like my KTM Airfilter ..

After all the contributions it will probably be the 661, i think.

Thank you.
