If it is the biggest saw you have, a 460 or 461 can pull a 36" OK, but if you have a 90+ cc saw, that is what you will choose. They balance better with the longer bar, and pull it with a lot more uuph, especially when you are stumping or milling.
Exactly.

On the east coast cutting hardwood, for sure. No question. West coast.... ehh there wood probably isn’t as hard (redwood, spruce and fir for example) and probably can pull that length bar easily on a strong 70cc I’d guess.

We do in our hardwoods out here on the west coast as well difference is normally how we fall timber as well as chain setup. A 8 pin sprocket on a 32” bar shouldn’t be an issue in redwood, it’s close to our red cedar soft stuff it’s not that uncommon with a semi skip square chain.

I would like to give a stock 462 a rip in hardwood with a LW 28” bar and full comp stihl rs chain. If it can handle and oil that... then it’s a success in my eyes.
I have with this setup already 5 tank charges and I have to say that the saw has no problem with it.
enough oil and power
Wood: dry beech and oak

For a 70cc class work saw with a 32" bar oi bar length wood, would you disagree? I've never seen an exception.

Come out to the west coast it’s not that uncommon of a practice to run 8 pin with a 32 on a 70cc saw in bar length wood.

Hi there Todd
Don’t be afraid on try 8 pin sprockets
This is a ported 461 with a 8 pin sprocket with a 28” bar and 3/8 skip semi chisel chain in one of the hardest Ozzy hardwoods Redgum.

Not to derail this “productive” bar conversation but hot dang that 461 sure runs strong. When I pop my Stihl cherry that’s what I’m gonna get. Nice saw man.

I see what everybody is saying about bar length and sprocket sizes. It’s very much a “to each their own” discussion. Here’s a curveball that’s loathed nearly as much as oil discussion....tuning your chain has just as much influence on performance as the sprocket you’re running, actually more. The only saw I own that sounds right pulling an 8 pin sprocket is my 394, the rpms are up where they should be in the cut. Had my chain tuned for noodling slabs to make axe handles, cut beautiful and fast. Then had to cross cut a big tree and it was grabby as all hell. Didn’t matter how much power I had, the chain was configured wrong for the task. My stock 288 didn’t like the 8 pin, it pulled it but it lugged down more than I like. Swapped a 7 pin on it and it actually cut faster and rpm came up to where it should be in the cut. But again, it’s an individual preference, lugging generates more heat. Conversely, if your saw is pulling like a truck like that 461 then let er’ rip!

Here neither.

Good thing it was only Poplar or it would be unpopular.
