They are a matched set. Old cases, old top end. New cases, new top end.Is there anything that can be done to prevent this? You can’t do the new top end without the new case halves, correct?
Take it back to the Walmart for a refundOld style 462....piston cracked, then lost a piece. That piece then busted the case up. Needs both case halves, and a top end.

That's every couple of months for a logger's saw!If I ran an older unit hard, I'd change the piston every 100 hours.
Usually that would be a parts saw for the guys that I deal with. The ninety cc saws get a bit more consideration due to their increased value, such as the 390xp that I found a set of new loaded cases that had a chip off of one of them in a insignificant place at a steep discount. Which made it a no brainer.I'm planning on using the new style cases, and top end. Looks like everything else is the same.
Anyone else done this?
About 500.00 in parts. Customer is washing his hands of it. I'll build it to see if it is possible to upgrade the old saw with the new parts.Ouch, how far is it from just buying another 462?
Good question. But what oil and ratio was ran through this saw??

After grinding out the flange, can you use the new style top end without issue?I have two of these damn things. 1 older and 1 newer I believe. The older one is getting that flange ground out. They say it’s there to cool the wrist pin bearing. But 5 series huskies are transferred the same way and don’t have anything like that and the wrist pin bearing is likely the most dependable part on them
That I do not know. I think there is a raised area in the floor that goes up into a notch in the cylinder extension underneath the intake port. I believe you need to grind that area out on the intake side similar to how you have to finish grinding the base manually around the transfer ports. That little bump might be in the way of the new style cylinderAfter grinding out the flange, can you use the new style top end without issue?
It was enough of a problem that a few years into production (mid 2021 I think), they changed the cases, piston, and cylinder. Once the piston gets worn a little bit it rocks enough in the bore to hit a flange that is cast into the case. I’ve had a couple in the shop but none bad enough to go through the bottom of the case. I have also had one or two that you could see a crack on the bottom of the skirt but the chunk hadn’t broken out yet to cause damageIs this a somewhat common occurrence on 462’s?
I only know one firewood guy that actually runs one, I like it. Smooth saw good power.
