My fire department is soon to be in the market for a new saw to do roof ventilation. Stihl offers the 461 rescue. It has a larger recoil handle, wrap handle, and muffler deflector, and a special bar cover used as a depth gauge. Husky doesn't sell a factory option such as Stihl does. You have to go threw a 3rd party vendor to get such a saw with the add ons.

My questions are this
1) have the bugs been worked out on the auto tune/mtronic carbs? Our saws can sit for a month minimum without running and up to a year before it gets a worked beyond a warm up run.

2) As volunteer fire dept budgets keep getting under funded, do any of you guys have a QUALITY used saw of either option this will give us years of service? I'm not entirely sold on the fact I need all the fire dept add on's so just a regular 460/1 or 576 PHO will do.

3) if we buy new, should we wait for the 462? Are there any improvements over the 461? Will the 461 now be reduced in price because the 462 is coming out?

We do have a new TS-420 and I would like to stay Stihl just for brand similarity, but we as a dept have no dealership loyalty or brand loyalty.

461 all the way. It will literally cost twice as much for the husqvarna version done by tempest or whoever, but it's the Tempest Ventmaster fire rescue saw.
Are fire departments even permitted to buy used items? I thought they were only supposed to buy new.

The 461 is a standard carb.....

Need to find out which carb will perform the best in a smoky environment....

We have the 461 and it has been fine, hasn't seen much use though other than training. Sure is fun cutting holes in a roof.

Our old vent saw is an husky 272 that had a conversion kit, I put a standard b&c on it for storm clean up.

Recommend looking a Cutters Edge. Basically a Jonsered 2171

Or 2188. External heavy duty air filter. Set up for fire. Big D handle guard on front. Come with carbide bullet chain. Two on each Ladder Truck and Heavy Rescue. Used to have on every Engine. Can't say enough about these. The bullet chain cuts through steel garage doors

I watched a demonstration by ICS who do conversions. They would do Stihls but much preferred Husky/Jonsered, they found the air intake system much better as the filter would go longer before clogging up

Not really concerned with chains at this time. We've never seen any problems with engines preforming in smoke. Usually if the smoke is thick enough to make a difference on performance, you can't see to make the cut safely. Air filter wise, the only problems I know of it the air filter freezing over from water spray and -3* weather.

We don't have a johnsred dealer near us (53011). I don't know much about them, aside from that they're a husqvarna twin.

According to your location you should be able to contact @04ultra which I believe carries jonsered saw.

I thought rescue saws were not allowed to be mtronic or autotune, due to electric shock making them paper weights?

I know the 461 is carb and the 576 could be had either with or without autotune, the 462 is mtronic only supposedly.

Is that a flashlight mount on the clutch cover?

Some do come with flashlight mounts. Some guys put there fire cam in there also.
