Anyone ever rebuilt one??

Have a guy says he has to have it fixed, piston scored 50 psi .

Any videos on them anywhere?
What model group are they in?

If i remember correctly they share the same chassis as a 291. So you could always "big bore" it. Other than Ive never used one.

I have one of those that I got as part of a saws for work other saws deal. I ran it once, robbed some parts from in and it sits in a box, I also have a MS261, and for something with the same displacement and footprint the 271 is highly disappointing...
There is no aftermarket for that cylinder, there is for the piston as it is shared with the 261 however.

MS271 shares platform with MS261. If its a newer model.
I have 2 saws that I am in process of making into 1 runner.

Both saws have minimal run time. 1 was lein seized on its first tank. 1 was run with brake handle on and burned a hole just above clutch.

I’m confused? How does a 271 clamshell and 261 non clamshell share a platform? Is it like a husky 350 with a riser for the pro saw?

It isn’t I had a 271 that I rebuilt had failed crank bearings. The cylinder cleaned up fine only thing it shares with the 261 is displacement and a few hard parts. I have the ipl’s and repair manuals and it is the same as a ms291. The one I had ran good and cut well after I rebuilt it. I’d say on par with an 026 stock for stock and it was smooth I’d take another if one came up. Not bad to work on either

I believe fuel tank is the same, as are pistons. I believe one could swap out flywheel and coil and make 261cm a regular carb version. When you see them side-by-side, they are very similar.

I just had an issue with my MS271. It's 6 years old, moderately used and pretty well maintained. All of a sudden, it wouldn't start. After troubleshooting it, I found that the piston side exhaust cover came loose. Is this common? Seems strange to me

This is the first time I have heard of it happening.

Same here. I've seen some issues with these saws but not this. They use some sort of hard silicone or epoxy that holds up pretty well.

Yes they did have some issues with some runs of the older 271/291’s also 311/391. I’ve personally seen 3 that have blown because they came loose but not enough to make it die just lean out.

I used JB Weld Extreme Heat and put it back together. I had already ordered a hyway cylinder kit. I installed these and found that the piston hit the top of the cylinder. The concave part at the top of the cylinder had a bit of a lip on one side. I sanded this down and reinstalled it. The piston moved smoothly. The cylinder compression is ~90psi. Once I put the spark plug in, I have a problem. It no longer moves smoothly. It doesn't seem to hit the piston. Can you create too much compression?

I would have personally just found out a way to put the cover back on not a fan of aftermarket parts. I would have used devcon personally because I think it’s far better and stronger than any jb

I coulnd not get the new Hyway cylinder and piston to work, even after sanding down the ridge at the top of the cylinder. Initially the piston hit the ridge, see the mark on the piston. After sanding, I the piston moved freely. However when I put the spark plug back, it would bing.
I gave up on this and reinstalled the old cylinder I repaired with JB Weld Extreme Heat. The saw is working again.
Apparently, this has happened to others. See the attached Utube. He ultimately finds the problem is the cylinder cover.

From what I have seen, this happens when the cylinder runs really hot for an extended period of time. I had a customer that was using a MS 311 for milling and ended up blowing his side cover off the cylinder, got hot enough that epoxy Stihl uses got soft and the compression blew it off. I used high-heat JB weld and put it back on and recommended that he didn't mill with the saw. Didn't seem to have any issues after that for just regular wood cutting.

The JB Weld Extreme Heat held up for the initial start up. Once I started cutting a large log, it failed. I will try Devcon. If that doesn't work, I'll try an aftermarket cylinder
