Bigger is better It's nice to have the extra width when you need it.
I have a 37"(119dl) Windsor bar on a 394 w/ the 48"MKIII. I just borrowed Mikes 50" for big maple and I'm 90% sure I won't take on anything bigger than a 42" from here out. The 94 cut fine, actually I was surprised how fast it went. But then again, it was Mikes chain...
Don't forget to budget for a respirator!
I've been running a 2100 milling pine and spruce here. I'm running a 36" bar and 404 round ground chisel @10* with rakers @0.030. I run the oiler on high. I get about 2 cuts on a 12' x 30" slab to a tank of fuel and oil.
This saw seems to work extremely well for milling with this set up. 404 chain runs much cooler than my previous 3/8 set up on the same saw. It has tons of power and only pulls down when coming in off a big knot when it is really digging itself in.
If you can get parts to keep one going, I wouldn't overlook it. I have two 2100s here and enough parts to hopefully keep going for years and I have less money invested than a new 390 or 3120 .
