I never had a problem with points myself .Besides that with some ingenuity you can vary the timing a little bit without shifting the coil or key .
One of my 125's came with an offset key, probably 5 degrees and had been converted to using an " Atom arc" instead of points .The danged trigger device went funky so I pulled the flywheel and low and behold the points were still there .Hallelujah ,great day in the morning, now we got something .It runs better on those old points than it ever did on that trigger .

I did think of something that might make sense possibly the reason the trigger appears to have hotter spark might be due the fact most triggers fire at the most positive portion of the sine wave .Where as with points that could vary some .With points where ever they lift, early late or spot on it's going to fire .Too early or late not as hot .

Can't sleep... so up at 1 am doing stuff.

As for points, yes, if they are set right, usually great performance. But they need to be set exactly right.

I just figured I'd try the newfangled add on chip... if it works, great... if not, I still have the points.

I've read where others have used a Nova chip and they reported good results.

Still working on it. Slowly. Have to get some reeds made for this series saw. Hopefully I will be able to find the original set somewhere around here.

Other saws took less work so I decided to get some of those done first.

Very interesting.
I'm in the middle of a D44 build which is very similar.
Your post gave me the SKF CR seal number.
Thanks.
