So, I had a client contact me today about another matter, and mentioned he has a 60” spruce on the ground and didn’t have anyway to buck it up...so I have a nice test log! Lol I also am going to mod his ms440, and freshen it up.

I want to get some .404 square chisel chain 50” loops...what would you guys get?

I wish!! What brand of chain? I haven’t liked the .404 skip round file chisel that I bought last time it was really ruff and didn’t feel fast(Carlton chain) looked nice and was sharp, ran it 36” and 42” and was disappointed

The one I have is a Oregon chain. I can get you the exact specs tomorrow Nathan.

Thanks Mike, I had a lot of chip clearance issues with the 42” bar buried in wood. It would clear chips, and get them stuck under the chain, not 100% what the issue is, but it’s a pain, don’t have that issue with 3/8 as much

Interesting that it's not doing it with the 3/8. How is the hook on the 404 chain?

It was brand new, and no better after one sharpening. Maybe it just me! But the old Oregon chain that I revived was faster

Old Oregon and Carlton chain was much, much better. I have some NOS Carlton .404" chisel from the 70's that's light years ahead of anything they make currently.

The best .404" chain I've found currently on the market is Stihl (46 RSLF).

Yessir, I'll dig out those rolls this weekend and get close-up pictures. One is Oregon and one is Carlton, .404" x .058" gauge.

I really like the square tooth and hood on the classic Carlton chain. It sharpens well and holds an edge for quite a while.
