So they're using exhaust to purge exhaust? Seems counter productive to me.
As long as the divide stays clean, fresh charge stays uncontaminated and is at optimum ratio, what does it matter if you purge the spent gases with spent gases, fresh air, fresh charge, or juicy farts?

These juicy farts.......are they as fragrant as I imagine them to be?

Why not just purge with the fresh mix like usual instead of keeping exhaust in the cylinder any longer than need be? Maybe im missing something but i can tell you there's nothing clean about juicy farts. Those will foul a good pair of drawers instantly

I won’t pretend to be an engineer.
Sometimes answers are found in the most unlikely places.

Why not just purge with the fresh mix like usual

Couple of reasons.

EPA of course.

Waste of fuel.

I for one like the stratified saws. They run longer on a tank of fuel, and you ain't breathing nearly as much hydrocarbon.

So do they run longer on a tank because the strato ports put fresh clean air in front of the fresh mix charge essentially eliminating any fresh charge from escaping out the exhaust? Therefore the carb can be tuned leaner than normal because of no fresh mix loss but still providing the right air fuel ratio with less fuel? Hope this makes sense

Im sure it is. So with keeping these hot exhaust gasses in the cylinder longer, is that the reason for the hole in the case blowing air towards the exhaust? Trying to combat the increased cylinder temps while keeping the epa happy?

Older common 2 strokes purged with raw fuel. Purging with either air or exhaust has to be more economical and cleaner

Sending out unburnt fuel charge had essentially in today's world given the 2stroke a death sentence. Some clever cookies discovered ways to mitigate this and keep them on the shelves. Without a strato cylinder design keeping the cylinder compliant would be at the forefront of engineers minds. A lot of factors (some conflicting) go into that 500 top end. That's what keeps this interesting I suppose. Just dissecting the 'why's' & 'how's' of what we have in front of us. Many modders stuff their spinner cutter straight up the exhaust port without doing what Randy is doing.
