The wood Kenny. 404 Takes a huge swath out. The milling ripping chains are skinnier.
We can't all be as good as you. I'm just a hack.

I'm done tearing up equipment like you hacks ;).
This is why so may have trouble with milling imo plus dull chain. Kerf smurf BS. If your wrecking stuff why bother, right?

Nice Wilhelm. Seeing it's a Stihl, it should be good for a tenth faster in the cut! [emoji12]

Should allow you to cut longer between sharpenings. You have full chisel or semi chisel?
Dolmar's don't rely on 1/10 of a second to win a race, they simply win by seconds lead!

The .404" chain I have is round tooth.

had to look at the old homey stuff i have after readin this thread. thanks fuggers. the old C-5 has a oregon 52? .404 on it. i have the bar and chain off the C-9 that is a bit longer and kinda rusty but looks almost new. might clean it up and put it on the C-5. hoping to take it to Randy's next week for the "old saw" races. so what file size am i looking at for .404?20180218_110829.jpg 20180218_110804.jpg

Tempting . . . ;)

Don't encourage him. We got enough people here. Everything bad don't visit either;)
You're just afraid I'd snatch up all large frame Dolmar's, admit it! :D

5.5mm fits my .404" loop perfectly fine.

I've been kicking around the idea on using .404 skip on 20" HN bar with a 70cc saw for some flush cutting.
Stop kicking it and pick the idea up! ;)

My PS-7900 is pulling my 20" .404" B&C setup quite well.
Although I only made a couple bucking cuts, I'll get more runtime on it soon. :)

I have the set up bit still debating if I want to beat on a saw like that. The biggest factor will be when I need to flush a stump next.

You will not hurt anything with skip 404. My/our typical mods on my oe362 pulls full comp 404 28" 83dl. Big main bearings is what you need. I noodled with it five times in a row buried in maple to break in the F-Cabers. After twenty tanks of H1R it was just not there. After a tank or two of dino oil, a timing bump and some new 404 buried in wet sugar maple, it came around quick.
The saw was at it's limit with cutters, bar oil and chain load. A 440 would have been fine with it.

Edit: 3:00 pm
By "five times" I mean five long back to back cuts and cool down. Repeat four more times. Plus other trimming on one more tank. Took three tanks to see results that you could feel.

Damn it got hot, again and humid today, ugg.
About to run 404 on the mill. Second cut might be a video if the first one goes well.

Here we go. Let me know how good this camera is. I have to get a macro setting or start taking pics through a 5x glass for good chain pics.

MS660 single port, no muffler screen, all oem and box stock single port power head.

After trying the 36" 050 bar with little success it got parked. Needs the gauge rail done over and a new loop. No good bleep bleep bleep...moving on

404H 28" 7 pin free hand round file job. Uneven cutters, uneven face angles, aproximatly twenty degree top face angle with the drags still at 0.032. The depth gauge comes set at 0.045 The chain gets run in dirty firewood the first time out after file or grinding. These chains are/were ground for Oregon Autosharp systems on a harvester machine. They have no hook and tiny gullets. After some file and/or grinding for more hook they bite hard. This chain will stop the saw quick and pull the motor right down in four stroke. Too much hook on this cutter set up. You could mill up hill with it.
This saw was tuned fat and finally ran and oiled right. So that was a relief after four problems with parts.
Red oak 19x23x8ftish slab in the middle. Cut that one 4.5" thick. Other small slab is 9/4. This tree has dry wood, wet, spalted, worm wood and dense heartwood. The first cut to split the tree for loading up was a disaster last week. At least it was a down the heart cut.

This is the cut of Y from the end. See the burn mark on the wet knot, it has a matching a one on one side of my 36 bar. SOB to mill with that set up. 31" wide. I had to try with all that going on in the wood grain. This is where 404 earns it rep. More pics. Coming up.
