Wanna start this thread only because a search for 404 comes up with nothing.
If you know of a good thread covering this I’m eager to read it.

I haven’t found a dedicated 404 thread so this could probably serve as a catch all.

I’ve got quite a few bar and chain set ups but only very recently have I begun picking up 404. It seems beastly.

I think everyone has seen redbull661’s videos, and after talking with him I picked up a 28” and 36” 404 Bar for my incredibly badass Tree Monkey 661.

I’ve also got a basket McCulloch 795 and basket p60 that’ll both run 404 when I finish up the builds.

Seems like the choices for 404 are pretty lean..
Stihl, Oregon, Archer, Woodland Pro have full chisel offerings.
Semi Chisel options are about the same.

Stihl and Oregon are the only options for Square?
Wtf?
Seems like 404 would take to the file great?

It would seem to me that a semiskip, square chisel 404 .063 Chain would rule.

Anyway.
That’s my opening salvo.

Wouldn't think a semi skip .404 would be needed, as .404 is almost a semi skip .375 spacing already. .404 vs .500
Clearing chips isn't really that big of an issue on a .404 work chain.
Durability is high. Though rocks and T-Posts give zero *s-words about what pitch chain just hit it. Lol..

Haven’t run a file over it yet but looking forward to it.

I’ll try to get more glamor shots, but this’ll have to do for now.

Seriously,
Why wouldn’t I run all my saws above 75ccees on 404?
Beasty, holds an edge, less cutters to sharpen.
Where’s the down side?

I know older saws ran bigger chains but what’s the history of 404?
Was it only for loooooong bars?

I know little and would love to know more.

Thanks OPE!

Like anything, pros and cons. It cuts slower for one thing. On most saws anyway. Over 90ccs might be a different story, but under that, 3/8 is probably gonna be faster. Bigger cutter, wider kerf, and bigger sprocket (.404x7pin is about the same as 3/8x8pin) means you need more power to turn .404 than 3/8.

It's also not as smooth as 3/8. More vibration for the user and more stress on the bottom end of a saw. I've never used it for limbing, but I think I can venture a guess that it'd suck.

Probably not a big deal, but local availability is probably just about nonexistent. I doubt many shops carry bars, chains, sprockets, or bar tips in .404. Maybe out west?

404H is great on a chainsaw mill to. I like 83dl full. I just made skip up for the 3003 mount 117dl to try out. 404RS full round is hard to pull with a stock saw but doable for short burst felling with that bar. You have to back off and keep it wet. I'm doing some oil pumps tonight for 1122 saws. Would not put that set up in an oak stump.
Hoping to stick with 8 pin for less tail wear. Don't have a 32" 404 set up yet. Considering swapping the tip on a new sugi bar but I'm not sure. It's going on an 066ne for large weed control. It is an 063 lw bar. 404 will add weight but not much. Just ordered a loop of Archer to try out in 3/8 063 105dl. If it seems so so I'll swap the tip to 404 and move on.
Most 064's and 660 I have run in 36" did much better with 404 vs 3/8 unless the chain was new chisel. They cut poorly with worn down semi or round chipper chain in full comp 3/8. Not so with 404 semi, it gets faster.
Seen a few 395 jamming the bar with 3/8 chain on a 40ish" hard nose right along with 088. Those 3002 mounts don't like 3/8 much.

.404 works just fine for anything if you don’t care about speed.
Which is legit..
It’s big, beefy, forgiving, and durable...

Not fast...

Like ever....

Unless it’s high tooth on a 50hp bike saw...

I don’t use one of those to cut wood with sooooo...

Utility use it is..

Well I know it's not entirely recamended but I run 404 on my super pro 81 because honestly it hasn't seem to give 2 *s-words so far but I also just bought a thing called a rocket sprocket. ... oversized rim sprocket and a 404 roller nose bar for it. But it's the only thing I am really willing to run on my stihl 051 mag. Just works nicer. But also if my memory serves me right doesn't carlton make 404 pitch as well. But does anyone know a good place to get the 404 bars at. Other than ebay

And as far as square filing by hand save edge files are awesome. I personally use there flat file with the double bevels on the sides and Nicholson triangular files
