Here are a couple of pics of the crank end.

The measurement from the bottom of motor mount to the end of the crankshaft is 40mm.

I thought it might have a special short crankshaft , that engine would not work on a mower . Metal gas tank dates it prior to 1974 .
Very cool machine , I have never seen one up close only in pics .

Thanks for taking the time to take those pics , I was curious .

If I can't use the motor on a deck, then I might as well sell it. I wondered about that short shaft after I measured it for sure.

It sure runs great though! It's just that I've never had a burning desire for a lawn edger, but I love those bricktop LawnBoys.

I was lucky enough to find 2 of these , one which I'm using and will out last me .
Note it's a 501 series which from what I understand is supposed to have needle bearing in the lower end instead of the usual bushing .

It may be sold already .

The good old days when a warning sticker was enough to keep idiots fingers and feet out of harms way , now they have to have a ton of levers and gadgets and are like pushing a truck .
I never saw Scamps sold in Canada , there was a steel body green model much the same with a green shroud .

The Bronze color was used on the all 1958-59 C series brick top mowers but I always thought the buttercup was yellow and hence the name ??

Hey , to me lawnmowers are (almost) as cool as chainsaws so you can't just have one !!
Remember to time the blade in the right position so they run smooth .

I just read your "90 degrees to the crank throw" response. Thanks, still wondering why it would matter though...

I have an electric start model I bought new long ago. It has not run in a long time but was always totally reliable.

The blade was set so it helped the engine thru the stroke by the blades inertia . I'm not sure if it's theory or actual fact but they do seem to run with less vibration if set at 90 degree .
I was told to do that years back and continue to do it and I'm pretty sure the service manual says so too .

The one thing that is seriously lacking in the good ole US of A is common sense.
One stupid law suit to the next is why we have all these need less safety gadgets
on all this equipment that we buy.
The one that gets me the most is the stupid pic of a child falling into a 5 gallon
bucket on every 5 gallon bucket you buy. All because one stupid parent wasn't
watching there child.

We will soon be legislated out of cars, it will be illegal to drive your own, starting with freeways and progressing. Just like the rest of the progressive crap. Of course, all these power tools will go the same way, you will have to be a "professional", registered and licensed in order to buy or operate. They won't need labels then.

Actually I had many nice vintage mowers including this rare "free-air" power products twin cylinder (yes, it's running in the pics!), and a super clean all original Leader mower with a Clinton two stroke.....

And the hard to find/rare Briggs "sonoduct" engine, this one was NOS.......

I still have some of the earliest Briggs "die cast" vertical engines circa 1953/54 that I intend to put back to work one of these days, here's one, though this one is from the 60's, with the wind up starter that I also sold a few years back......

What was the sonoduct B&S motor used for. Never seen
anything like it.
