How about a worked slant fin 044 cyl I heard they are better?

That they are.
Be careful with ring locating pins with that cylinder matched with a 12mm piston.

Overall, if it were me, I'd do the muffler, advance the timing a smudge, and run it like it is.

Jer is right, but if your saw is together & running already, it's not worth taking the cylinder off.

Jer is right, but if your saw is together & running already, it's not worth taking the cylinder off.
I just pulled it out of like a 4 year storage cleaned the carb and put a new needle and spring adjusted it and it runs nice man. Cant wait to see how it does in the wood!

I got the Dolmar 7900 out of mothballs too and it also fired right up , I use pure gas for storage no ethanol.

Is your "storage" in the basement near the shop or outside by the barn ?
I've never had gas go stale in my basement...and I'm too cheap to use anything but chit gas. (Or Avgas for the hot rods)

I've got some of the older labor units for Stihl and McCulloch .I really never paid much attention to them because I neither repair saws for a living nor have any I send to a shop .
