So...I widen the exhaust port where it meets the muffler quite a bit. Then blend it back into the port. Then match the muffler, heat shield, and gasket to the jug.

Does that help make it run better, or am I wasting my time?

How about an answer from a plumber?
If there is no restriction from the cylinder to the muffler what is the benefit?
A little polishing for purtyness and good to go?

The guys that leave it sitting on the shelf won’t know the difference

Making room for expansion of hot gases exiting the cylinder

I'll rephrase...
If the opening from the cylinder to the back of the muffler is already getting larger, is there a way to determine if more opening is needed?
Is there maths available to determine how much expansion will happen at highest operating temp?

There is math, but I'm not good at math. I personally think it worth it in 2 stroke engines to have the largest area possible on the exhaust port. I would think the closer to the piston, the more important it is, but that would be great for dyno comparisons: hogged port vs non hogged

Someone probably has a % number in their head. But I’ve never heard it. Same with intake tunnel vs port size

I would think it a small gain, but a small gain here and there start to add up, remember the factory did a great job on these and huge gains in one area are unlikely, so you have to take what they left IMO and try and maximize those.

AND.....

We had a set of twins born yesterday. The cow only wanted to take one of them.....so Glenda and I have spent some time tricking her into taking care of both of them.

The 462 is just a well refined, lightweight machine. It's not a saw that will ever be a contender for the one cut competition in big wood. Not without some serious re-engineering. Personally.....I love the 462. It checks all the boxes for me.

Pics of the boxes please

The exhaust port on these where it enters the muffler is pretty small. It actually narrows down as it comes from the plating edge out toward the muffler.

So....like Kevin said, in order to allow for expansion, I widen the port as much as possible.

This same cow has raised twins twice before, but we always have to trick her into wanting both of them. We do that by making the calf she leaves behind make noise like it's being hurt. She and the other cows come hauling ass over to see what's up, and after doing that a few times, she won't let it out of her sight.

My un-ported 044 embarrassed some 066/660s! I'm sure some of it was in the chain, but the cocky pro with the 066 thought his strong power head would dominate the cutting. It didn't!
Oh I’m not buying that I have read between the lines and I believe it’s not ported but not exactly stock either.
