My neighbor snagged a prize. However like most other Stihls that have been sitting around ( shelf queens ) it's very hard to pull on the starter rope. I pulled it once, the rope came out. Pulled a second time, it locked up. Suggestions? I wanna see if the starting mechanism is OK before we go down the rabbit holes of fuel and ignition issues. I'll take any tips.

There is a long screw that backs out of those and if i remember it right, it can get in the back of the flywheel.
I have a few of the 270 and 280s for parts or projects. Actually liked working with the 270. 280s turn over pretty tight starting or I would like them better

Spray some WD-40 down the sparkplug hole, intake and exhaust port, don't want to move the piston too much if it is dry.

OK, here's where we are wiith this project. Recoil starter works OK, engine starts. Will only run with the throttle fully engaged. It runs very well. Put it down at idle and it will die. Sounds to me like a good carb disassembly and cleaning might take care of it. Any other places to check? Fresh gas in the tank. Thanks.

With trash picked saws, and I've got my share! I always replace the crank seals and impulse line.

I have learned to do this too, I had an 046 and a 261 that were trash picks and I assumed the obvious parts needed to get it running, after all that found that the crank seals were trash (most likely overheating abuse from the previous owner). Caused another tear down and piston replacement this time. I would almost say that take a good look at the bearings when you have the crank seals out, if you are already that far, might be worth it to just go ahead and replace the bearings too.
