IMO, it took 30 years for any company to produce a saw that is lighter and stronger than an 044.

The spring AV, M Tronics, clean air filter tech and decomp are all addl bonuses.

My beloved 044 has not seen much use recently.

There are more powerful saws the size of the 462, but it really just is so damn near perfect. Ergonomics, balance, autotune, fuel economy etc...

Really could care less if a saw can get through the wood 2 seconds faster. The 462 are just a joy to use and I would bet anyone that a faster older style saw would take more time to get a job done if you factored in refueling, adjusting tune, and restarts.

I couldn't agree more with you, really has made my other 70cc saws feel obsolete, I tell people it is a pleasure to run it, makes me smile every time.

If your a logger like me after 6 hours cutting you won’t pick up the 44 again. Vibes are really cut down with the newer saw and the filter doesn’t constantly need attention. Power is similar as mentioned... but the better ergonomics and more evolved saw in general are hard to ignore with the 462. Firewood guys or hobbyists those things probably aren’t as noticeable for there use, but I think it’s still something to consider.

462 is probably my favorite Stihl and right now my favorite saw, I only run a 20" but I look forward to seeing what Randy comes up with. Very interesting.

Interested in Masons answer to this one myself as he uses his saws more then most on here. Just for firewood i prefer the 462, interesting what a logger thinks.

If you get the chance to try one, I recommend it highly! I can walk you through a few easy mods at home that help.

If you're a firewooder or land steward like me after 2-3 hours in the woods, the ms440 is fine and I generally don't realize what I'm missing. Except for the snoot full of exhaust when I'm brushing out a thicket on an escape route, and the tingling/numb fingers on a cold day when the AV bushings turn hard and the rough idle doesn't help. And the frequent tuning checks with weather changes. But enough of the quibbling. I feel fortunate to be able to run the saws that I have.

How about the 462 compared to a 372?

Hmm I think an early 371/365 OE lowtop and a 462 are damn near the same feel and weight in the hands (the later 372xtorq is a bit heavier than the earlier OE saws). Stock vs stock I would say the 462 and 372 OE are fairly evenly matched in performance... maybe a touch more torque with the 372 but that’s splitting hairs. The oiler, av and filtration are evenly matched as well. Fuel economy goes to the 462 I’d say and the mtronic is nice to have in a worksaw... it’s always tuned. It works much better than the older previous versions of mtronic imo. The 372 is easier to work on and parts are cheaper. Overall they are pretty evenly matched. It kind of depends on your brand preference and whether a guy wants mtronic or wants old skool adjustability.

You don’t have to be from the west coast USA to be a logger. Different species of timber are harvested in different ways... in different places... for different purposes. I have respect for a logger regardless of where they are from. It’s hard work, dangerous, and your not rich... but it’s rewarding, fun and gives a sense of accomplishment. I love being outside. It’s not for everyone.

Mason helped me when I was clearcutting a lot earlier this year. He cut the difficult trees that I had concern over. He is a skilled faller. Maybe not West Coast, but he ain't over there.
All hard woods over this corner of the country. I'd take his help any day.

Much respect to all loggers, I typically cut my own firewood and would never want to do the job they do, very dangerous job, stay safe out there! My dad logged for a long time cutting for different companies, cut in 48 states, my mom finally had to ask him to stop, she was a wreck everyday he left not knowing if he was coming home, many trips to the hospitals had taken a tool on her. Loggers risk a lot and don't get paid enough for it.
