Mike that is freaking awesome!

What is a Bing 48 off of? I never had the pleasure of owning one.
This particular Bing 48 carb was originally on a
038 super. The 038 came a couple different carbs. Bing, tillotson and I believe Zama carbs, maybe more. The Bing carb just happened to be what I had.

I took a couple measurements of the carbs. The inlets and outlets of the carbs are virtually identical. I don't have a good way to measure the Venturi in the Bing carb due to its odd shape. The Venturi in the Bing carb does appear to be bigger then the Venturi in the Zama. The Bing carb came off a bigger saw so I'm gonna guess that it is also jetted a touch bigger.image.jpeg

That's very interesting! So it looks like the saw needed more midrange fuel like @Poleman does on the dolmars. Which leads me to believe the same results could be had by modding the existing carb.

I believe your probably right. I think some of my gains here are from the larger 038 intake tube as well as from the v stack.

My 036 had the metal mesh filter on it when I had the Zama carb on it. I can still run the mesh filter on the Bing carb if I want. If I put the mesh filter back on I can also put the air filter cover back on. The only problem then would be that it wouldn't have a choke. It's not really a huge problem but it is nice having a working choke.

Mike,
Most of your gains are at high rpm. I'm thinking the larger venturi, larger boot, and lack of a choke shaft are the cause of your added power. The jetting at that rpm I believe is largely controlled by the H. I'd think off idle/lower rpm would be more enhanced by the larger jetting in the bing. Looks like I may have to go digging for more in mine. Maybe bore my venturi slightly and use an 038 boot. Thanks for posting

I think there will be even more gains with a higher intake floor and the 038 boot.
JB Weld to the rescue............again

On 2nd thought, when I dug back into my 036 earlier this spring, I believe I epoxied it back up to 75 or 76°

Mike, if you have time it would be great to see one piece at a time changed to see if you can pinpoint if there is one variable making the difference or a combination of them

That's why I was so excited that Mike was going to try this out. Having a spare handle and being able to modify it was a great idea. It was very cool to see what Al's porting can do without the limitations of the 036 boot and a better flowing carb.

I was too chicken to play with mine from @drf255 Mine will stay as it left New York.

I'll see what I can do.

In what order do you guys think I should swap things out?
