I find saws to be much like automobiles and firearms - I can pretty quickly and hoestly size them up to pick the keepers from the possible sellers. I like the linup I have and on't intend to get rid of any of them. In fact I will likely be getting a few more as I hear a 550xp and 390xp calling my name. There are a couple more I could think of in a ported 7900 and/or a ported 044 and ported MS461. Of course if Husky will get off the dime and come out with a GOOD 80-90+xx A/T saw, that may be a winner.

I hate to think about how many firearms I've had and sold or traded to get better ones or to help pay a bill.

I have given away a few saws to people but they were pretty nasty models. I only sold 1 saw once which I got enough $ to buy a new replacement out of the U.S, but I regretted selling it as it was a 'made in Germany' model and I liked that saw. CAD is not rational, either is BAD....both illnesses leave you with many items that are not really needed. I just missed a near new 60" GB bar the other day, I still am not sure what I'd have done with it anyway.

When I build something (car, truck, bike, firearm, saw) I build it the way I want it to be. When I sell whatever it may be, it is a top working piece of equipment. - I can never get back all the work and effort I put into whatever it is - then I look at the dork that buys it, totally unaware of what he has bought and knowing full well that he will have it trashed in no time.

I know it is not my problem or concern, but it does bother me. The only time I can think of an exception was a 'project bike' (KDX-200) I used to do technical articles for a motorcycle magazine. The first article was in 1984, that bike became a legend and the fellows that have owned it since then are still running and racing the bike today - a rare exception to the rule, but only because of all the magazine articles they had all read.

When you sell used items you get thrown into the same pool with other all the rest of the 'used' equipment - somebody trying to get rid of their 'problem'.

Mmmm KDX200's, one of my first enduro bikes, I had one of the last air cooled models 89/90 I think. I thought I was pretty cool fitting a wisieco piston and boysen reeds. Cool bikes and a big upgrade from the XR I had before. I know what its like putting in effort/time making something really good and selling it to someone who has no understanding of what you have done, nor have any appreciation for it. They usually love the sticker kit and shiny renthal bars though.lol

Sounds like you may have been reading ADB back in 1989-90 - I was still writing for ADB until 1992. You probably read a few of my articles back then. Great times with GE, G. Ballard, C. Catter and a heap of other guys that were full on fun to be around.

We used to laugh at the letters from the guys that would write in and ask for 'stickers'. Maybe you remember Murray Watts' article on V-8 juice in the mix to turn the bike into a bike with the power of a V8 engine? Crikey, Geoff had to write an apology to the owners of V-8 juice because of all the guys that actually PUT V-8 JUICE IN THEIR TANKS.

I did the satire on the 'Roost Boost' that used a roll of 'Life Saver' candies wired in as a 'Zeus Boost' - the God of Lightning! Guys actually complained when they didn't feel any improvement in power, even when they wired the Life Savers into the lighting system.

I generally don't sell stuff. I had a customer that was a used car jockey and had been one for fifty years. Was down about all the really good ones he'd sold over the years. I told him if you don't sell this good one you don't get to the next good one. He kept the earliest big block Vette I've ever seen through.

I have taken a liking to Stihl 066's.
I now have 3 of them.
I also have a ported 026

So finances are a bit tight and the wife "commented" on the fact that I bought a chainsaw to save money on buying firewood, and why did I now need 5 of them?
Fair point I guess.

So the Stihl 039, that was my first saw, that I painstakingly rebuilt got advertised and I sold it today.

He was a young fella.
Asked if it was an XP model.
I said, no..... its a Stihl
"Oh" he said, my last saw was a Husqvarna and the XP gave it more power.
I said "Well this is a Stihl and it goes good"

I rolled a foot thick round onto the lawn and let him give it a run.
It cut like a champion, as always.

He said:
Well it cuts better than my 345 and it was a 20" saw as well. (I shuddered at the fact that I was about to sell my beloved saw to someone who classified saw size by bar length)
I asked what happened to his 345 and he said it blew up trying to cut big timber with it.

I took his cash and watched my saw leave to a certain, painful death.
After all the work that went into making it great, it was painful to watch it go.

I was a great saw but I dont think I will ever regret selling it.
If i ever want a mid sized saw again, I will probably chase an 044, but for a bloke cutting firewood, there is not much that cant be done with an 026 and a couple 066's :2guns:
Yeah it's hard. I've been forced to part with a few saws and guns. It really is hard. Some you always do miss.

I finally sold my first saw. This one one easy to see go. I bought it as a fixer, and spent no money. Just a cleaning and a modification to the secondary strato port (it was sticking open). The saw was a Mcculloch "professional" saw. 40cc. It sure seemed similar in design to a "Wild Thing". I tuned it, cut with it to verify proper function, and now it is gone.:D
And I doubled my money.

I will never sell my first saw. My 036 Pro that I bought brand new. The other 6? Fair game for the right price! Oh but I need another lined up to fill that spot!
