I've seen guys snap the end of the crankshaft off with an impact. I'd be more inclined to anchor it down and use a breaker bar but that's just me.

We've all been there man...best of luck.

I totally agree. Just gotta be careful with an impact *s-word can get out of control real quick with a good impact gun.
I've got a 31hp Briggs with a snapped crank for just that reason... Freeing up a stuck piston and about 5 seconds of impact use snapped off a 1" crankshaft. Good thing it is mine.

I think I'd probably cut the entire jug. Into more than just two pieces if necessary.
Grease is out if even a tiny bit of the trans are open, and I think bad things happen fast to the crank using an impact. More likely than not a new top end is going to be needed. Don't add a new crank to the bill.
Cut the cylinder.
