@Mastermind a good starting point instead of a rating system would be a a serious discussion on the warranty that comes with porting, and shipping expenses if there is a problem, and what expectations are...not just for gains but also life expectancy and required maintenance of a ported saw. maybe a sticky somewhere with each builders own thread spelling out these terms. If the builder doesnt have a thread then its buyer beware. I think a rating system is ripe for trouble

Most often the saw modding world works on the verbal agreement and good ole handshake. However from time to time there are bumps. That is where a disclaimer or document stating agreement between both parties could help. But that gets technical but is doable.

The forum kinda has its own judicial system amoungst members that look out for one another.

More tomorrow, same bat-time and bat channel?

Maybe some sort of a waiver as well.
at that point the site might be exposed to liabilities legally

by the point a guy is ready to drop his cash and saw in a mailbox I see it as important that the client understand
1.) ported saws void all factory warranties and carry no warranty from the builder
2.) how much the service will cost including shipping, when and how to pay
3.) when and how to package/ship the saw and about when it will be returning home
4.) care and feeding of a ported saw, oil and fuel recommendations, etc.
5.) general type of "porting", agreed upon goal ; work saw, gtg saw, piper fire breathing leather embossed dragon
6.) that the builder is committed to building a great saw and is willing to answer questions and assist the buyer with any reasonable problems
7.) the builder will communicate in a timely fashion regarding delays, problems, etc.

by the point that any system has 100 reviews I bet a lot of the kinks will be smoothed and it will become obvious what the strengths and weaknesses are of different builders and vendors
the best informed customer is the most frequent return customer

how did all this sand get in my ass?

Obviously if you are doing business with someone on the site, there will be some pm's. If there is a problem it should be hashed out there. If there is no resolution then before being able to post about it maybe a moderator can be asked to review and help negotiate. If it's a reasonable complaint then whoever feels wronged can request permission to post a buyer beware or seller beware warning with no replies allowed. If anyone wants more info they can pm the parties directly. This way no one can just spout off when they get an attitude.

There's just to many variables. Even a set mod on a particular model at a set price that's been done by the builder scores of times can bring down the wrath. As we have just so recently seen.

additional nuggets for consideration
how to handle reviews for vendors who aren't members?
reviews of specific products?
no reason to rush a chance at doing it really well, hopefully the information will be valued far longer than the memory of the debates that produce it for all to enjoy
