Very interesting. I have one of these coming and have considered the exact same mod. Did you have to turn the webs down as well as clearancing the rod? I did this once several years ago but forget the particulars.
Just used the JMS Tool to relieve the large rod end a bit. Ive got about .009.

Stihl used those for a time in the early 034/044/064 saws - The thinking was that the shields would protect the bearings from debris.

It didn't end up working out that way.
I recently acquired an 064 with shielded bearings. By the serial number, I believe it to be a very late model.

A 12mm 044/440 sure fuk it... but a NIB 10mm Id probably leave alone but that’s just me. They run pretty nicely. I’m interested to see how doc goes about converting it though.
