The price they get for a chainsaw is like they are gold plated or something. I saw the first Stihl 500 last Saturday .It ran fine but not $1200 worth of fine . At my age I doubt I'll ever own one . I'm perfectly okay with my older classics ,plus the fact I know how to work on them . I don't think I have any clam shells of any brand except a couple of boxes of parts for 029 and 039 Stihls that didn't have the mustard to stand up to tree service work .They lasted about two years before they failed .

I agree, the 500 is a cool idea and I know people who own them and even those that get them ported really like them, but the only way I will probably get one is if I find a broken one at the dump. I have found that I really like the pre-2000 saws. I find them especially fun to work on!

I don't have a problem with cheap saws and/or plastic, in fact that describes most of my fleet. I'm not paying close to magnesium pro saw prices for them, that's just stupid. $500.00 is a more realistic price for the MS-391 or 460 Rancher, but you can still get an Echo 590 for that price if you shop around.

I did a little bit more investigating of this problem child .I know almost nothing about this model However I found out it's a clam shell design with a plastic crankcase that uses a kind of permatex seal instead of a gasket .So air leaks are a common problem .Oddly the saw looks almost brand new although supposidly it's two years old .It might sound arrogant but I won't waste my time on a over priced plastic saw .From reviews of this model some swear by it and some swear at it .As a favor I found out why it would not oil properly which is because it didn't run properly .Dang shame to spend $450 on a lemon .

I picked mine up for $5, only had two tanks of gas run through it and three chains, this was the first saw this person bought and they didn't realize that chains stretch. They threw the first chain, bought two more Tri-Link chains and really cranked them down, ran them until dull. Returned the saw to the store saying it was junk. I cleaned it up, dressed the chain and now it works fine.

I'm not bad mouthing the brand just this model .Fact is I have an old 2100 CD that came from some island off the coast of Washington state I think has been tweeked (modified ).Now that one is a screaming meany I got very cheaply .Come to find out it was assembled without the bracket on the rear of the carb which caused the carb to rattle loose .Took me forever to find another but that cured it .

I have taken a liking to the older saws in the 2/3 series. I have a few of the newer 5 series and I like them as well but have not had to open them up yet. Thankfully
