If you decide to go with the newer style top cover you might have to drill and tap the two holes on the recoil side, I did on the couple that I've done in the past. Also on the rear one you might want to put a threaded insert in it because the metal is thin and add a little JB Weld on the underside to give the insert more support. On the front hole be careful not to drill into the recoil screw hole. You will also need to take a little off the front of the cover because it will be a little long. The saw in the pic is a white top that I was going to put a newer aftermarket top cover on and changed my mind.

I have a clean 61 rancher with a white top. If I put a P/C from a 266xp do I need to modify the top cover? I really don't want to cut up.

I put a 266 cylinder on that saw in the pics above and put the original white top cover on, it fit without cutting. A couple of pics of it with the white top cover that's been painted black on it

Ronie, thanks for the reply. There is so much info on this conversion, not all good. I'm thankful to hear from someone who did it firsthand.

What carburetor did you use? Do the cover holes line up with the needles and idle adjustment screw?

I put a 234B carb off of a 268 on it. I'll take a pic of the carb and see how it all lines up in a bit, I can't remember at the moment. I think the 61 carb would work fine unless you port the 266 cylinder.
