.032" rosin core solder works good. But if the squish is too big .062" is the next size up that I've found.

When 3 of us use a saw. Me, Myself and I LOL We don't worry about running a contest or a speed race. I cut wood to cook and make a fire for me and my beautiful wife Missy.

I use the HyWay kits and use the gasket and the sealer to prevent leaks. Squish is not a concern to me.

If I had a 51 I would put a 55 kit on it though. I don't need a lot of power on my bad back and elbows no more LOL ~!~!

If you are using a base gasket, you shouldn't have to worry about squishband clearance. Although if you are using an AM gasket, I might check it to make sure. Never know if any given AM gasket will be the exact thickness of OEM.

However, XP-Slinger and I did a gasket delete on our little brother's closed port 55 and there was plenty of clearance. But again, not being certain that everything with AM parts measures exactly the same as OEM down to the last .001", I might check squish using the first method I posted just for peace of mind. It literally only takes a few minutes. You just need to remove the sparkplug and then the recoil so you can roll the engine over by hand. Easy-peasy.

Got to run it some...and have some issues. It starts, oils and idles fine but falls on its face as soon as it hits wood. I was cutting in some 12" hemlock. Throttle seems responsive on the low but I'm not getting the rpms on the high side. I know it's still breaking in but it seemed especially doggy. I think the decomp may be an issue. It would close properly one time and there us some "seepage" around it that I can't pinpoint where it's coming from. I'm gonna plug it anyways. I'll do that and try to tune it again. Here's some pics at least. I stopped because I had to tighten chain.

You may have posted it already and I apologize if I am asking a redundant question... But did you do a compression check??? If so, what did you end up with? And you may want to do another after a little bit of run time.

Also I don't recall if you did an OEM kit or AM. I remember seeing people posting that some AM cylinder kits have excessively wide squish clearance.

It's a hyway closed port cylinder and windowed piston. I don't have a compression gauge at the moment, mine crapped out. Compression feels good which means nothing but you really gotta yank it without using the valve. I'm gonna plug the decomp hole and check everything over before I try again

bumping to see if there is any update, I just purchased one of the Closed Port kits from Hyway and figured your work could lead me around any snags before I get started.

I am still not happy with how it runs. After messing with the carb some its a little better. Maybe Im just expecting too much from a 55cc saw? I cut down a small diameter (5") dead crab apple tree and it was a struggle for it. It cut the branches fine but the trunk was different. But its still breaking in too... I was able to borrow a compression gauge so I am going to check that and the squish this weekend. I dont think my issues are from the piston and cylinder. And I wasnt able to run the saw before the rebuild so I have nothing to compare it to. Feel free to post pictures and questions on this thread if you want.

carb is a new aftermarket walbro clone. Im thinking my issue may be in the carb. I dont think its timing related because the flywheel key look fine with no wear. I set coil gap with business card. Its also a new aftermarket coil too. Theres just so many variable that are driving me insane...

I have a wt170 from a stihl. I should be able to switch throttle and choke rods, top cover right?

Probably can switch cover and rods. Check rod diameter - has buggered me up in the past. And check top cover - is it exact copy.

Nnero:

Here is a vid of my brother's 55 closed port, it is bone stock except for a base gasket delete and this is an OEM closed port. He was thinking about selling it so we made a vid to demo it. Wood is 10-12" seasoned ash and B&C is 20" 3/8 full chisel.

Maybe this will help you gauge whether your saw is running up to par or not.

Think I may be on to something... decided to check squish. I have .062" solder. The piston wouldn't even touch it! Removed base gasket and it measured .05". That may explaind my issues? I don't have a piston to check with my oem open port cylinder. Should I be contacting hl supply or did I do something wrong?? I have a new compression gauge coming this week

If you are saying that your squish is .050" without the gasket in place, I would definitely leave the gasket out. It could still be alot tighter, most look for around .020"-.025", some like it even tighter than that.

Either way, give it a try at .050" without the gasket. It should run a bit stronger than it did.

I have heard a few say they have seen very wide squish with some AM kits. This could be one of those cases.
