My saw with the early non decomp Mahle and 120 seems snottier that the later decomp saw with a 120

If snottier means the same as snappier, that fits well with what a larger carb venturi will do. It is a matter of 16.67mm vs 15.08, but I never checked if there are other differences as well. The venturi can be opened if you know what to do, and what not to do...

Gotcha, is there any other carb with the same dimensions as the 87 that could be converted? There might be a cheaper alternative that just needs a small tweak with a spring, jet, nozzle or whatever.

The HDA 198/199 seems like obvious candidates, as they have the same venturi as the -87, but I have no idea what other parts are different from the -87.

Nico....Just had a look on a 357 that has a 198 ..looks like the linkage to hold the throttle on for hi idle is all on the opposite side to the 87 on my 262xp . Best as i can tell without taking both apart.

That may be a show stopper, as least as a simple solution.

I can see that you would need to have all the linkage ( its different as well ) to swap onto the 198 from 87 ...and if you have the linkage ...well you probably have the 87 carb :D

Randy swapped a 199 into a 262. It was the same bore size as the 87 I have here. He did a thread on the swap on this site.

I have a bunch of 262 jugs here, including a non-decomp KS. There's not much space between the case and the jug on a 262. If you've built one you know. Put the jug one backwards while you've got the degree wheel on it and it won't fit. The flywheel side tunnel has an indent in it for the flywheel. I'd venture to say that the tunnels are the same size in all of the jugs. There may be subtle differences in the shapes though.

I can tell you first hand that an 87 makes a PORTED 262 a different saw over a 120/144. On a stock saw, it very well may do nothing at all.

When we ran 3-262's at the CT GTG @paragonbuilder hosted, mine had a 144 on it while the other two saws had 87's. My saw was the slowest of the three by a bunch. I swapped in the 87 I bought and my saw was right in between the two saws. The saw with the lowest exhaust and the 87 was the fastest. All 3 were neck and neck to the point where a chain coulda made one outshine another.

I did buy the plates for the conversion. @super3 has done the job in the past. I have my 87 off the saw for measurements and comparisons for when I attempt it. @rjames is getting the first one for the 262 I ported for him.

Anyone know how to get the nozzle out of the carb?

Flat steel punch, just smaller than the nozzle, tap it into the carb bore. Easier if you do it with the plates/shafts out.
Thanks Joe.

The carbs gonna need a full disassembly for the boring.

I wish I knew the next plate size up for the bore. There's not much room left in an 87 though. There's nearly no Venturi.

Here's an 87

Walbro lists the largest hd/hda choke bore at 22.19mm 16.77 venturi 20.56 throttle bore. Not sure what model that is exactly, other than it is a hd/hda series carb

Could probably use aftermarket WJ plates some of them match those sizes.

Thank you Joe. I'm thinking of thinning the plates and screws on the one I do.
Your welcome

Thinning the shafts/screws could come in handy.

Figure I'll have to mess with a few more carbs soon... echo sure don't believe in carb overkill lol.

Sorry for the hijack,

Joe, can you make a medium deflector with more height?

I find myself prying the lip open after I weld on for more area.

On the outside I agree.
The inside is what I was referring to in my previous post. Big difference.

it's on the same side on 199&87, would be surprised if any 357 carb has it on the other side.
Your 198, acc pump or not?

Here's a thread that Tor did on using a 199 in place of the 87 carb. Venturi is same and its a matter of getting the choke etc sorted out. Good read i think.

thanks Dave,
I have in mind to go the 199 route on my last 262 build that I have started, thought to make a cheap throttle linkage and give it a try :)

The flywheel side tunnel has an indent in it for the flywheel.
not all of those jugs had cut in in the transfer tunnel.
There was 2 different G flywheels according their IPL, but I've seen 3 different flywheels, they are slighlty different in the cut
