IMO PPE gives some a false sense of security and they're more likely to try something beyond their ability.

I wear a helmet when climbing or anything is falling and ear plugs, gloves, and sunglasses all the time.

I meant to add that exact thought. I always felt that if you surround yourself with a false sense of security you will more likely get hurt. Ppe is good but you still have to be aware, you get tired or distracted no amount of bubble wrap will save you.

Sorry, but that seems like macho (I know better than you) justification for not wearing PPE.
PPE serves as protection for all who wear it, whether you are a skilled professional, or a weekend firewood warrior. PPE is there to protect all from self imposed, or situational complacency.

As far as chaps and a false security, don't think of them as a safety article, think of them as an article of clothing that keeps you dry and warm and protects your work jeans from chain throws and gas, oil and sap residue.

That's not what I was trying to say. Im not saying that because i have 20 years of tree work experience that I'm better or less likely to get hurt than anyone here.

My point is that some think because they're decked out in PPE and feel safer its time to go tackle that big leaner they've been eyeing, in that case PPE will do no good when the SHTF.

chain saws don't care about skill levels.

I see both sides of this discussion, I (stupidly) elected not to wear PPE on that particular day because of the type of work that I was doing and the location that I was doing it at (Grandmas' house cutting saplings out of a fig bush). That was my mistake, I knew better as I have been running saws for the better part of 15 years now (everyday for the last five) and have seen some gruesome accidents. The point of this thread was to be an eye opener and hopefully encourage some to buy, and more importantly wear, safety gear.

Agreed.....but don't get complacent because you're wearing it was my point.

Agreed. I throw mine on when I'm stacking firewood to save my jeans. I've spent years ignoring safety items...I'm working on developing better habits now.

Welp, you achieved 2 of those 3 with me, and I will wear them after they arrive whenever I run a saw, so soon it will be 3 for 3
