Get yourself some cheap China chains and have at it. Even if you destroy them your not out to much money.

Jeff here is some lgx round I just did and works great like this for working. This may be what @Redfin was saying. Just file enough to get a good corner and go from there. You don’t have to file so much, corner is everything.

When I convert round to square, I just do the corners at first, and it cuts just great (you ran it that way on my 261 Jeff).

Also, you have seen me at enough GTG's to learn any time you want!

I like to do it on the saw. Use a stump vice in a flat surface. Move each tooth to the same position so I can see the corner of the file is in the corner of the tooth.

I filed my first square file chain the day before the upstate NY GTG a couple of years ago. I was as nervous as could be, but it cut just fine, I was relieved!

Pretty close. Sometimes they end up with less side plate than that. Ill normally stop as soon as I get a good corner under the top plate.

What about that square file guide? Anyone use it or try it?
Try finding a vintage Graberg bar mount guide. You can get them off eBay for around $15. The G-108 or G-104 are good options. Someone posted a video a few pages back showing it. The old ones accept a double bevel file. The angle adjustments are endless, at least for a work chain. Set it up by matching the angles of a chain that has been properly filed/ground. I, as well as others here would gladly send you a chain to compare by.
The ATOP is an ok guide, but the Granberg will teach you faster and easier.

How much longer do you have it for, or did you splurge?
Nope. No splurging yet.

No idea. He was gonna bring the boys up camping but it's getting cold for that lol. Custer has a gtg in December. We're gonna try and get Rod up here for that and we'll get it to him then
