The older (Klassic) rakers were not as smooth as the newer ones. That is why they were changed. For a short while they made both, then the smoother one just became standard.

I would think the angular rakers would be faster than the rakers that look like teeth. Smoother transition, no?

Buying a few square files and filing until your fingers are sore, skin is missing & they are near black in color. Simply scrubbing fingers with soap won't clean them. Do that many times, ask a few specific questions here after fingers are conditioned, keep a CL cutter for reference & then you are somewhat on your way to know how to square file.

Yes I have a atop guide. It is a good learning tool. But not perfect. Took a bunch of adjustments to get it good on both left and right hand cutters. Mostly level and centered. Did not like using it on the bar. Cutter moved to much. Plus it is not for durability of cutter.

There is no adjustment for different angles. You get what you get with atop. For novice it will help you learn how to hold the file to get started.

It ain't that hard if you know what your doing. LOL
I guess I just gotta keep at it. I will eventually get it. Just trying to get as much information and as many tips as I can to cut down on my wasting good chains. LOL
Education and knowledge is good.

If you are converting round, file just enough to get a corner. Check progress on your cutters.

If they look good do several cutters at a time before you check them. It will help you "feel" where the file needs to be for the angles you are shooting for.

I think what the guys are saying is your only going to get it by doing it. You've read, watched, & been shown. Time to get after it. Sometimes learning cost $$.

The time you took to read this Mr. Lee has sharpened 3 chains... On a mill... backhanded & blindfolded....
