Got to use the thumb to steady the cutter.

Forgive me for reading this so long after the post, but I like to use a paint stirrer to steady the tooth instead of my thumb. I'll try to demonstrate at the CT GTG, as I know someone there will either take a pic or video of it.

You need to try a chain vice if you haven't already Mike.

I'm sure that would be good, but there is usually more than one way to skin a cat.

I use a stump vice so I can put the saw on my wood box, which has 45 degree lines drawn on it to keep my filing angle correct. The paint stirrer in the opposite hand locks the tooth in place, as I move each tooth up to the same place to keep things consistent.

I do one side first, then the opposite side. It goes fast and seems to work for me. Not saying it is the best, but it is fast & effective.

The problem with the triangular style files, as can be seen in your post, is they take too much off the strap on the opposite side. The flatter 6 sided files work much better for me.

If you want to buy my unused triangular files let me know, I'll sell them to ya cheap, I don't use them any more.

Yes, they have 3 usable surfaces instead of 2, but I find the flatter files easier to use, and I can do rakers and other things with the flatter files also that I can not do (easily) with the triangular ones.

I must be the oddball I guess. My file, a save edge double bevel, files left cutters ok, but it's hard to see the point right handed. But I can't get it to file right cutters. It doesn't grab anything to file off. Almost like the tooth is harder. I had tree monkey file a chain on DDaves 441 at the MI gtg and he noticed the same thing. He filed the right cutters inside out and it worked fine. We both think it's the angled teeth on the file. Any merit to this theory?

Looked last night and couldn't find any straight vallorbe

Sounds like half of your file is dull ,when filing the inside out you are using the left cutter side of the file ,try another file .

Reilly mentioned he had several of the save edge that seemed dull straight out of the case.
They looked and felt fine but wouldnt cut like they should.
Russ at save edge asked for them back to replace.
Ask your dealer how to exchange them.
Also save edge sharpens all files really inexpensively.
Same price direct to customer or through dealer on sharpening
