The roller bearing slide works better on the RS 2. I never could get consistent chains on mi e with wore out stuff. I prefer a swing arm in the lower end. Never got to use a Pro sharp and probably never will at this rate. The Simington is the only one with parts availability now so it’s better than a used Silvey swing arm

Silvey parts only have one place you can get them and they’re still available. Dave if you ever get out here you’re welcome to try my pro sharp.

I thought the best grinders were swing arms?
Prosharp?

Swing arm style is the base model with the least amount of adjustments, take a the upper models the adjustments are fast easy to make without lasting design changes.

Anyone putting out really good chains from a RS2?
Negative here. I just dug it out of the barn while looking for some rusty files lol.
I bought it from Baileys along time ago. They still carried 3 models of Silvey, the RS 2 being the least expensive. Baileys shipped it without a stand and never did send one. I set it up on a bench. There was a learning curve with dressing the stone, best stones etc. There was some play in the chain. I think I corrected it by pulling down on the chain, or pulling it against the stop.
I do remember getting a few chains almost scary fast in black and red oak.
But to me, it's not worth the effort and time. Made a dusty mess in the basement, and was no faster than filing. I get more consistent chains filing.
I use different ,sometimes funky angles on different wood and change them through out the season, job, etc. Almost set it up a couple years ago, as I was in a bit of a filing slump. Could get them to cut, but not CUT. Pair of reading glasses put me back in the saddle.

a small wedge in the bottom of the bar between the chain to tighten it up helps a lot.
I guess what I’m meaning is that I have some play in some of my bar grooves and the chain pushes sideways quite a bit. Are you referring to wedge in bottom side of bar between bar and chain or somehow between groove and chain driver?
I know I either need to get a bar closer or make a shim so I can reset the groove width.

Wish I could find the old Oregon style closer that you changed shims on and hammered it down the length of the groove.

In the bottom. Just to tighten the chain up

I make a lot of replacement parts for Silvey round, swing arm, RSII grinders. I haven't gotten into making anything for the Prosharp and SDM4.

I’m not so sure about that rail closer tool. Kris made a bearing type that I tried on a 36” Windsor bar that has V’d grooves. No dice. I put it in a vice to try to pinch them back together, no dice. I beat the snot out of those rails and I can’t get them to close even a little bit.

How much to wide are they? How deep is the groove still?
