Thanks, Will do. I fabricate one-off's from aluminum and cres for my day job. I spend hours a day with a 1/4" burr motor, roloc's, scotchbrite, etc. so this will be a familiar task.

Got after it tonight, I think it went pretty well for my first time. Port edges look fine, except for one spot on the exhaust side that may have been a casting flaw or damaged when the ring came apart. I can see it well through the plug hole and the plating looks intact. It isn't raised or deformed inside the cylinder. Ok to run?
I started with 120, then 180 and 240 grit. Finished it with a good buffing with green scotchbrite on the roloc holder.
Thanks for everyone's help so far.

Transfer was the heaviest on each side of the ex port. I ended up taking some of the plating off as you can see here

Guy was gunna get em sent out and re-nikasiled. So if I could save it's a plus but there was too much on there. Lots of port edges in that area.

I don't think an open cylinder is too bad

I thought I would dig up this thread since today I tried the @Mastermind method of transfer removal for the first time. I have a bunch of carcasses here that I have been rebuilding and I have a few cylinders that I would like to save. So first up was a Husky 154se cylinder that had transfer on the exhaust side that looked like it might clean up okay. I followed the steps Randy laid out and when I was finished, I was truly amazed. Once finished with the scotchbrite the cylinder literally looked new again. Wow! I was so impressed that I grabbed a real nasty looking Jonsered 630 cylinder and gave it a go. Again, the cylinder looked amazing - almost like new.

Thank you Randy for this great tutorial! I salvaged 1 hard to find cylinder, and one that I thought was a goner. :neng2kb:

You're very welcome. Ol Scott Kunz mentioned that he sanded the transfer off years ago.....and I gave it a try. So gotta give the real credit to that fella.
