Might want to start with saws you already have, as after you get one done, it can get hard to stop yourself from getting more done after that.
To answer your question specifically though, they are both good saws once ported, can't go wrong there with either.
Presently have 261 ported by MMWS. Randy is working on my 400. Yes, hard to stop at one. Just like Lay's potato chips, Can't eat just one.

I cheap out.
Although I have many saws, I usually grab my 272xp for bigger stuff, or Poulan 3300 for smaller.
So basically, being a regional thing, I could do it with 2 saws. Lol

That'll be a sweet combination. What do you use the 261 for mostly now that it's amped up?

2. Jonsered 2149w, Jonsered 2063w turbo, Jonsered 2071wh

3. Husqvarna 346xpg(42 mm), Husqvarna 560xpg, Husqvarna 576xpg.

And a couple... or 3 more

The 3 plans, can of course be revised and mix matched to suit my specific needs.

What can I say ? All three plans Are Needfull things 😇

I bought the saw about 4 years ago and was never really happy with the power. I started down the porting rabbit hole and I'm hooked. Randy made this saw enjoyable to run. If I grabbed a small saw, it was my MS241 and not the MS261. The 241 pulled almost as good as the stock 261 and a couple pounds lighter. Since porting the 261, I have not run the 241. I maintain my 10 acres of woods and heat my home with a boiler.

As a side note, I bought my first Stihl saw, MS270 Wood Boss in 2010. Started heating my home with wood and began buying more saws. I went down the lighter less powerful saw path after my original Wood Boss purchase. My largest saw for years was 50 cc. Two years ago I bought a MS 462 and realized that I had been going the wrong way on my saw journey. The 462 opened my eyes to more power with more weight, but get more done a lot faster. And now, I discovered MMWS less than a hour from my home. My saw inventory is growing. Thanks Randy for all your information and help.

You can do a lot of damage with a 50cc saw, and if you can only afford one saw, that's a good one saw plan. If you can afford more than one, it's still a really good saw to anchor your 3 saw plan with.

I started with an 034 (50cc) and shortly after added an 046 (76cc). Served me well for more than 25 years of land maintenance, helping neighbors and friends, and felling and bucking about 8 cord of firewood a year. Those sizes make a great 2 saw plan if you can resist more saws. I couldn't.

Lets be honest there are multiple 3 saw plans depending on usage.
4 running- sub 40cc for limbing
3 running 40-60cc for many general duties including some falling and firewood cutting.
Currently, 1- 60cc and up for the bigger stuff. Need to work on this CAD level.

I'm just trying to resist adding a 3rd three saw plan and I don't even have CAD. That's what I keep telling myself.
