I have a ton of saws but my 3 saw plan of must have/ use most.

Ported 346 variant.
Ported 372 variant
Ported 394/5 variant.

That would cover about every scenario you've got.

Great plan! May I ask, why do you so concentrated on Dolmar's saws? Didn't you try to find some decent alternatives from other brands? I mean Saw Stop or standard Makita or Bosch(source)
Lets be honest, Makita doesn't make any 2-stroke chainsaw saws and never did to my knowledge - the companies Makita bought out did, Dolmar & Maruyama!
So, why bother with Makita when I can get the real thing - a Dolmar?!
Not saying that I wouldn't pick up a Makita, I actually have one - my XS ported Makita EA5000 , which is a rebadged Dolmar PS-5105.

Bosch?
Does Bosch make 3.5HP+ 2-stroke chainsaws that I can tackle logs 40+" in diameter with? o_O
I don't think Bosch has anything I need nor want. ;)

I got introduced to Sachs-Dolmar at a very young age - an electric 285 and a 2-stroke 40cc 105.
Considering the abuse I exposed them to not knowing anything about maintenance and sharpening chains those two left an everlasting impression.
Then came my PS-6400 which created a desire for more, much more - and my signature came to be!

I am happy with what I have, why venture into other brands in hopes of finding "decent alternatives" as You called it?
I will stick to the perfect fit instead of looking for decent alternatives!
I occasionally handle other brand chainsaws, they are no better than mine!
I keep reading how (potential) Dolmar (Makita) users are concerned about parts and dealership support and I don't get it.
IMHO, most breakdowns (of any brand chainsaw) are caused by improper usage, abuse and running dull chains by the operator.
With proper maintenance parts wearing out can be anticipated, also forum entries can shed light on what parts may require more frequent replacement - just order them beforehand and keep a spare parts stash!
I don't have a local dealership and for now I still get parts from Germany.
Off course, one should have some technical and mechanical insight in order to service his/her own equipment - although one should have the same just for running OPE in the first place.

Apologies for the lengthy post!
Thank You for reading!

Use what You feel comfortable with!
If it works for You nothing else matters!

Cheers :beer-toast1:

I feel like a a real underachiever after reading this thread. I currently only have 4 saws but I now see that I’m in need of more. I’m in the market for another 400c and a 661c though so those will help.

I was thinking a 3 saw plan consisted of 3 saws!
How yous guys are stretching that number is beyond me.
I googled it & the Sesame Street #3 came up.
According to them, you choose 2 & add 1!

Chainsaw math is higher level math than Sesame Street math. Most people cannot comprehend it; I am a quick learner though.

See below...

Sesame Street Math 3:

260, 460, 660

Chainsaw Math 3:

200t, 260, 346 (x3), 361, 044, 460, 461, 064, 660, 3120...that is 4 sets of 3 in Chainsaw Math

There are others too, some for fun, some not worth mentioning...

Just like the title says, how many saws do you have in your 3 saw plan? I'm at 7; details follow.
53 as of this minute, and they all run but 2
One 394 and one 395 that have spider cracks on the PTO side case halves
I'll be weldering them soon as my girls travel softball calmes down

Pretty much use 10mm 044 and 064 for everything, but I always rotate in a 3rd saw when I cut. Depending on job that'd be a Husky 240, Dolmar 5105, Jonsereds 70e, sp81, or 056 Mag2.

10mm 044 and 064 with a 70E, SP81, or 056 Mag2 rotated in? Most excellent.

Currently at 11 with 4 or 5 2 series carcasses. 192T, 55, 630, 266, 268, 272, 372XT, EA7900, 390, 395, 3120. One more makes it a 3 saw plan X 4, 4 more makes it a 3 saw plan X 5.

I don't think carcasses count, but 11 saws is still a solid 3 saw plan.
