How do you like the 404 semichisel on a big bar? I am liking it better than full chisel 404. Makes smaller chips but spits out more chips. Thus faster IMO. I have been trying it on a 50" bar.
This is my first experience with 404. Normally the saw wears a 28" 3/8 full chisel. I had no doubt it would do well with the new set up. But it has far exceeded my expectations.

It is easy to run a 3 phase motor on single phase as long as it is under 3 horsepower. We do it all the time using a VFD (Variable frequency drive). It takes your single phase power, converts it into DC and smooths it with a capacitor bank, and then uses IGBT's (or another type of solid state switch) to make a new 3 phase waveform. You can go over 3 horsepower, but they require derating, and only certain drives will allow you to do it. Here are the drives I normally use: https://www.automationdirect.com/adc/Shopping/Catalog/Motor_Controls/Drives/DURApulse_-_GS3_(230_-z-_460_VAC_Sensorless_Vector_Control)/DURApulse_-_GS3_Drive_Units_(230_-z-_460_VAC_SLV)#Input_ms="230+VAC+1/3+Phase"&start=0
$250-350 isn't too bad for what they will do. You can also vary the motor speed if you wanted.
If you don't know what you are doing, then don't attempt to hook one of these up on your own! Also, don't try to use one without configuring it properly!

I have a VFD on my mill but on a lathe I wouldn't like one. The acc slope would be nice but the decel slope kills you when trying to cut threads. With my single phase motor I can step on the brake and stop the lathe instantly when in the low RPM gears.

That is all in the settings. You can cut the decel down real low if you add a braking resistor (Or possibly even set it to coast-to-stop). What is your decel set at? And does it kick out the drive on overvoltage if you turn it down?

Been sick as a dog; ended up at the VA ER on Friday, tested pos. for flu, and was dehydrated due to fever. My heart rate was abnormally high, they thought I was having a heart issue, ran tons of tests, but turned out to be caused by dehydration and the flu. They gave me a mask to wear and an IV, which made me feel better. I would have like another IV but they sent me home. I pounded down the water all day Saturday and pee'd like a race horse all Saturday night. Fever finally broke but the cough is still lingering, not near as bad as it was.

Later.

Next Saturday (Feb. 11) at 9am, there will be a charity woodcut at Mansfield, Missouri. This is the same cut where I first met you guys last year. The wood will be cut, split, and then sold. All the proceeds will be split between 2 different missionaries. The cut will be just a few miles off of 60 hwy. I can PM an address/directions to anyone that is interested in attending.
Or you can text me at (573) 620-1036.

Any takers yet?
