Good morning folks. We got just a little bit of snow in yesterdays event, just enuf that I consider it a nusance snoe. Wet to begin with then thick(not fluffy) stuff to fininf out less than 3" 's.
Looking like we got a quite a bit more than a little snow at the cabin. Thinking about 2 foot of the stuff as we’re halfway between Ely and Hovland which is right on the shore of L. Superior. I’ll have to wait until May to see if my tool shed is still standing. Ugh. 😣 IMG_4275.jpeg

The guy I cut for has some he wants down. I will keep this in mind. I wonder why the thorns deteriorate when the tree is girdled, but don't if you cut it down

The thorns don’t rot quickly on the tree either. But once the tree has been dead for a couple of years, the branches that start falling will have quite deteriorated thorns. It simply gives the thorns a head start on rotting when they are up high and out of the way.
Also the dead thorns don’t have whatever toxin is on the live ones. Some sources say that the thorns don’t have poison, but those articles are obviously written by someone who was never pricked by one.

In relation to honey locust :

I run the top side of the bar along the trunk/larger limbs to throw the thorns away from me.

I am not sure those thorns ever rot, they may get more brittle but will lay around for years.

They make really nice toothpicks though and bar groove cleaners.

Any girdling I have done is just a ring about 1/2” deep around the circumference of the trunk. Most of the ones that I cut aren’t planned so girdling isn’t an option.

I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment of the article writer. A jab from one of those to a finger will damn near make it unusable for a day or so.

20 Yrs ago an older guy (Was our School Bus driver) got Nailed on the back of the hand. Day later he was in St. Elizabeth Burn Unit. They did save his hand, But he was there 2 or 3 weeks. Another friend was bit by a spider and he was there for a LONG time. Skin Grafts ETC with Diabetes.

High of 67° here today and currently 40° and dropping fast. I hate cold.
Liking it hot is a strength in Missouri.....I really wish I was that way, cause it's hot more often than not down here.

23 heading to (maybe) 32. They moved us into the 3"-7" range for snow this afternoon and evening so have to see what happens. Got the splitter moved around and was able to split 2 quartered (half of a round) of the oak picked up Sunday. Filled the wagon with plenty more to do, pin oak always splits so nice, most of the times anyway.View attachment 483245

Currently 18 with 3-4" snow and hopefully it is almost done. Be out the with the blower in the morning cleaning up around the place.
