Question for all the firewood geeks out there..

Is it possible that winter could dry out splits faster than summer?

Assuming no rain or snow on the wood..

I would think that the very low humidity & breezy conditions would allow for that.

I have had similar thoughts & seem to have experienced the results you are talking about.

Even at best times during peak drying time humidity will be double or more of those in winter.

Dry windy winter weather is very good wood curing conditions.
Ideal for lumber cause no mold or bugs.

I would think it is possible as long as dry and windy; and above freezing.

Here is my problem/question: If the wood is frozen, will it dry out? It doesn't seem like the moisture will go anywhere as long as it is frozen. Am I right or wrong?

Morning all, 30° to 53° today. Back to the land of stupid this morning as usual. Gotta try my best to not let it infect me.

Your mom ever hang laundry out in the winter? Sublimation allows for it to dry below freezing, just takes longer. I would assume the same principal would apply to wood.

The old fella that used to sell us hedge said that sub freezing temps will freeze dry wood. He said that if it froze and thawed a few times, the moisture was frozen out of the wood. Bob delivered a lot of wood to us and it was always well seasoned. I’ve always had the luxury of letting my firewood season with time so I’ve never tested this theory. Good morning y’all

Good morning all. Woke to a nearly full very bright moon and just shy of +20f. This morning has only improved with full vitiam D being enjoyed from the sky, winds fairly low and upper 20's speculated for a bit later.

And this was after 2.5" of snow yesterday morning, which was the first measurable in the last 3 weeks or so.

Snow sometimes goes away at sustained-below freezing temperatures.....so it seems to my little mind that evaporation is occurring?

And, good morning people.
Another lovely winter day!
Chemistry class, sublimation is the changing of states from a solid to a gas without going into a liquid. One of the things we discussed, back whenever that was, was that snow went though this transformation. I remember the teacher telling us that sublime was heavenly but we would fail the question if that is how we answered it.

So..... does this mean I'm right in thinking that snow "evaporates".....or have I flunked?

Mebbe they are looking for the word "VAPORIZES"
DID I FLUNK TOO?
Both are correct but not the word Mrs. Carmichael wants you to use. 🤣 Little short woman who looked mean but fun for a teacher.

I know this: if I take an ice cube out of my freezer in August and put it in my driveway, it evaporates much quicker than if I leave it in my freezer and wait for it to sublime away. You should do an experiment and see how long it takes to sublime...

In august, it’ll liquify and evaporate..

But with wood you need it to reach EMC..
Equilibrium Moisture Content.
That is: as dry ass a piece of wood can get given the moisture content of your air..
Best we can do in this part of the country is about 12% MC..
but…
That same wood could reach 11% after a prolonged low humidity condition.
Like maybe what we’ve experienced this last 2 weeks, so it may reach its lowest moisture in the winter.
