Gotta go to Seymour and pick up a load of hog feed in the morning, should be around after noonish.Whatcha doing tomorrow, Derek?
I got a wagyu KC strip once just to try it.I think I will get a couple of Akaushi for a tax write off. Not really for just that purpose but I have been thinking of breeding down a generation or two with Angus to hit a marbling point that we can use it for every day beef. Never had wagyu before so it should be an adventure when I get around to doing it.
Seems everything Tom does is nothing short of excellent. It must run in the family. Does he get this from his Mother?Good morning.
59/89 & sunny........as per them as don't know nothin about the weather.
Tom finished the fender project yesterday...... pretty much impervious to anything, (I would even loan it to Thomas @Hinerman )
1/8" tread plate with lots of reinforcement.
He even added stake pockets behind the fenders.

(Just teasing you Derek. lol)
Akaushi are the smaller breed of waygu, 1100-1400 lbs on cows and 1700 bulls, and when crossed one or two generations down I am hoping to have nice marbling throughout. Are you looking at on hoof or hanging weight?I got a wagyu KC strip once just to try it.
It was good, but a little bit of a let down from my expectations.
I still prefer a good crossbred steer on feed for an ample amount of time.
The very best steer I’ve fed out to date was over 20 months old and almost 1600 lbs.
how big do the akaushi cattle get?
With me, it’s all about the yield of usable product. If a 1200 pound steer can hang at 800, that would be a huge win. The guys at the feed yards have upped their target weights to send to the meat packers. Last I heard they were sending 1500-1600 pound steers. Instead of 1250-1400.. more usable products,Akaushi are the smaller breed of waygu, 1100-1400 lbs on cows and 1700 bulls, and when crossed one or two generations down I am hoping to have nice marbling throughout. That's one of the reason I am butchering 36+ month old. They live an easy life around here until the night before when they go to J&J's. So far the meat has had a really good flavor and no toughness to it to speak of. Last year I didn't have the size I wanted and sent a 27 month old for personal use. Good flavor and all but not the yield I would prefer. I split with my parents so bigger is usually better. I need a portable scale and start watching on hoof to hanging weight. Right now I have a couple of eye of round roasts that I smoked and am cooking in a crock pot to fall apart overnight for drip beef sandwiches. With me, it’s all about the yield of usable product. That would have made a nice little GTG...Got the wagons hooked up in prep for splitting but rains are moving in & I didn’t get done bucking things up but I made some progress.
